The first factor is abetter understanding of the natural history of breast cancer and of the fact that the results of treatment areinfluenced more by distant spread when it occurs than by local or regional control of the disease. The secondis the discovery of increasing numbers of cancers of minimal dimensions by means of new diagnostictechniques, especially mammography. The third is the more pressing demand for less mutilating proceduresand the increasing requests from patients to be informed of the various possible treatments, including theconservative techniques. Finally, there is a widespread belief that if a conservative treatment could be offeredto women with early breast cancer, it would represent a tremendous tool for publicizing self-examination of thebreasts and alertness in seeking medical advice at the first appearance of a lump in the breast". • ¬¬¬¬¬ZZZVHQRORJRUJMedicine, Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea"Core needle biopsy (CNB) for thyroid nodules with previous non-diagnostic fine needle aspiration (FNA)results showed a low incidence (1.3%, 2/155) of non-diagnostic results. CNB also showed high diagnosticvalues for neoplasm and malignancy. In addition, CNB could prevent unnecessary diagnostic surgery in 96%(22 of 23) of patients with repeated nondiagnostic FNA results. This result suggests that CNB is a viablemethod of choice for the reliable diagnosis of thyroid nodules for which previous FNA results werenondiagnostic"(Commentary on: Yeon JS et al.: "Thyroid Nodules with Initially Nondiagnostic Cytologic Results: TheRole of Core-Needle Biopsy", Radiology 2013 Mar 22 [Epub ahead of print])Questions and Answersz Kidney Cancer Workshop Summary - with Sumanta Kumar, City of Hope, Duarte, CA, USAz Lung Cancer Workshop Summary - with Jared Weiss, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USAz Stem Cell Workshop Summary - with Anthony Stein, City of Hope, Duarte, CA, USASubscribe Unsubscribe Contact Back IssuesPage 3 of 3Senology Newsletter02/05/2013file://C:Documents and SettingsutenteDesktopSenology Newsletter ay.htm
