  • SQL Server 2008 R2 and Madison are two separate releases/editions that will be launched jointly.SQL Server 2008 R2 is the core database technologyProject Madison is the high scale data warehousing solution based on the acquisition of DATAllegoThe messaging for R2 is directly aligned with the 2008 messaging as this release builds on the value delivered in 2008 and enhances it with some new key areas.Enable Self Service BI Self Service BI with Gemini – this is about enabling users to get the data they need without IT having to do a 6-month project to create a new application. R2 makes it easy for users to bring external data into Excel, combine it with internal data, and then do all the analyses that they need using new and familiar Excel tools. This is all done “in memory” through really high compression in RAM – which is pretty powerful. None of the other major BI vendors can do this.Microsoft Sales data is a good example of an application where this type of capability is needed. A global sales repository of all of the transaction completed in a given period of time – through distributors, directly to customers, through resellers…if you want to run a report there is a series of pre-defined views that you can use. You can tweak them if you need to – but you’re very limited. If you want to pull in your personal data from your machine for a more complete view, it’s nearly impossible. Gemini gives you the power and flexibility to take all of the data, integrate it with other information – and within Excel do all the slicing and dicing you need to get to the view of information you really need for decision making. Users can then share their reports or applications with others by publishing directly to SharePoint. Once published, the Gemini Operations Dashboard in SharePoint this provides IT Pros with the ability to manage business intelligence through SharePoint like it was just another service they provide. This new dashboard allows IT Pros to look at which reports are being run, who’s running them, how often are they running them, is the server being over utilized, how can I move the app dynamically to another server…BI is basically another managed object for IT. The reports the users publish is the object and we enable IT to understand how it is being used and apply rules and policies to that.For traditional, richly designed reports that supports various output formats, we have Report Builder 3.0. Report Builder 2.0 introduced a new, Office-optimized interface to make it simpler for end users create or edit reports with little help from IT. The new Shared Component Library in RB3.0 delivers a “Grab & Go” reporting experience for users. This feature allows users to access and use pre-built report components (queries, tables, charts, maps, gauges, logos, etc.) as building blocks for creating new reports. Users will be able to create richly designed reports in minutes leveraging existing content. This feature gives a whole new meaning to ad hoc reporting and can reduce the burden on IT to constantly create different representations of the same information for different audiences. Instead, they can simply create all the critical reporting components to best represent business data and users can re-use and customize as needed to get the desired results. In addition reporting components, IT can also make reports available for use as data feeds for Gemini and other applications enabled with ATOM readers. The new mapping and geospatial visualization introduced with Report Builder 3.0 enables customers to get even more out of their data by producing new insights when business information is represented geographically on reports.Master Data Management is delivered through our Master Data Services solution. This will give us the ability to really manage the data about the data. Which is basically “how do I think about all of the data in my company? What is the one version of the truth? Is that view of the customer correct? Or is this view of the customer correct?” Think about if you’ve ever signed on with a Passport account and then you’ve created another identify on Microsoft.com…how do you join those things up and know that you have the most current and accurate information to verify that John Doe is really John Doe and what I know about him is the truth. Master Data Services is how you manage the data about the data in your organization while also managing the process.Improve IT & Developer EfficiencyThere has never been greater demand for IT to provide more value with existing budgets and resources. To achieve this, they need tools and capabilities that help them maximize efficiency across the application lifecycle with streamlined management, rapid development, and predictable deployment. SQL Server 2008 R2 builds on a long history of enabling DBA and developer productivity with new tools and capabilities to help IT administrators and developers make the best possible use of time and resources.SQL Server 2008 R2 provides new tools for managing large multi-database environments along with improved capabilities to help maximize the value of consolidation efforts, and ensure the streamlined development and deployment of data-driven applications. Investments in application and multi-server management will help organizations proactively manage database environments efficiently at scale through centralized management. This increases the visibility and control of distributed applications and instances and helps to streamline consolidation and upgrade initiatives across the application lifecycle.Increase visibility and control – Gain quick insights into SQL server instances and applications with tools like new wizards that help enable fast and easy multi-server management setup and reveal versioning information for more control over server sprawl—no professional services required.Optimize resources – Quickly identify consolidation opportunities with dashboard viewpoints, data and log file utilization rollups, and utilization trends through adjustable capacity policies—helping eliminate underutilized servers.Improve efficiencies – Accelerate deployments and upgrades through a new concept, a single unit of deployment, that packages database schema (database, tables, stored procedures, etc) with deployment requirements and can be extracted from existing applications or created in Microsoft Visual Studio®—helping reduce deployment trial and error.Trusted and Scalable PlatformLine-of-business applications (LOB) are the critical link between the IT department and the business. For R2, we’re adding something new called SQL Server StreamInsight, Microsoft’s new Complex Event Processing technology. If you look at the Enterprise today, you can have real time data coming in from any number of areas. For example, if you’re a manufacturer and you’re using RFID to track pallets real time – how do you get all of that data, like gigabytes per second, aggregate it and get it into the database to allows users to get real time insights from it? This is why we call it Complex Event Processing – it’s time based, large amounts of streaming data that needs to be made sense of and pushed out to users in a real time fashion. So we’ll be introducing this technology with R2. SQL Server 2008 R2 also helps you take advantage of the latest hardware technology advancements and enables high scalability building on top of industry-standard hardware for great total cost of ownership. Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 working in concert enable customers to scale up to 256 logical processors. We’re knocking down the scalability barriers – we can do high scale…we can do high scale up, we can do high scale out, and we’ll also do high scale data warehousing.In addition, Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 takes greater advantage of the processing power of new multi-core systems. This means support for more virtual systems per physical host, leading to potential cost reductions while increasing the scalability and flexibility of virtual infrastructure. New Hyper-V Live Migration allows organizations to move a virtual machine between two host servers without any interruption of service. All this helps organizations continue to get the best value out of their hardware and take better advantage of consolidation opportunities.Project MadisonScale your Data Warehouse to 100TB+Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 will offer customers scalability to meet the demands of growing data warehouses, with the ability to scale to over 10 TBs in the core release.With Fast Track Data Warehouse, customers can deploy SQL Server 2008 and also R2 on top of reference architecture that’s pre-configured and tuned to enable up to 32TBs of DW capability.Project code name “Madison”, to be released around the same time as SQL Server 2008 R2, is a highly scalable data warehouse appliance solution comprising of both software and hardware. Madison was developed conjunction with Dell, HP, and other leading hardware providers.

At-a-glance viewpoints provide insight into resources and data-tier application utilization helping you maximize your existing resources and choose consolidation candidates at a huge time savings.<click to animate> Today, preparing for upgrades and deployments means a lot of time spent locating the many disparate objects associated with a single deployed application (tables, runtimes, stored procedures) or preparing the many objects related to a database application deployment, without knowing if there are specific deployment requirements. Moving existing data-tier applications and deploying new ones is a very time consuming process littered with trial and error.With R2, we introduce a new concept to the market, a single unit of deployment. A new single unit of deployment will significantly increase the efficiencies around data-tier application deployments and upgrades resulting in dramatically streamlined consolidation and management efforts.

  • End users are the final consumers of “Business Intelligence” they are the ones that look for insights into the information that is provided and make strategic, tactical or operational decisions.Today end users use familiar tools like Microsoft Office Excel and Access to create their business models or reports and either make decisions themselves or share it out with others. This allows them to get solutions up and running quickly without any dependence on IT. The challenge with these traditional tools is that there is no accountability for where the data in their systems comes from and where the information goes. Not only is it a data quality issue, but one of compliance as well and is the reason why IT Pros within these organizations look to try and manage this information sprawl.IT on the other hand is used to managing their data and infrastructure in a secure, scalable and reliable way, but just cant keep up with the demands of the end users as every new request needs additional customization or the creation of new BI assets.Our vision for end user empowerment is about bringing the best of both worlds to the end user. End users should continue to rapidly create their business models and repots using the tools that they are familiar with while at the same time being able to work on information that is managed by IT, is secure and of high quality. All without having to directly call on IT to make it all happen. This is what we view as “Self Service BI”
