Lefty the white elephant is a unique way to share white elephant gifts. It involves sharing a story as you open and pass gifts between a group.
The rules for this white elephant gift exchange are simular to the standard game. All white elephant gifts should remain wrapped and placed in view of all the players. Organize the seating so that gifts can be passed easily between all players in an obvious right and left direction.
Ask someone to be ready to be the storyteller and read the white elephant gift story of lefty.
Player #1 is selected from a random drawing. Be sure that each person that is drawn has their name put back into the hat for the next random white elephant drawing
The story teller begins reading the Lefty story. Whenever a word with left is spoken, the gift is passed left one person. When the word right is spoken from the story the gift moves right. Stop reading when the word gift is spoken.
Whenever the story hits the word “Gift” another name is drawn for the white elephant gift exchange. The choosen player opens another gift, or just like any other white elephant game, the person has an option to steal an already opened white elephant gift.
The storyteller begins reading again from the story of Lefty the white elephant. At the word left, all opened gifts move left and the same for the word right. When in the word “Gift” is read the play stops.
The third player is selected by a random name draw. They have the option to open a wrapped gift, steal if they do not already have a gift, swap for another open gift, donate the gift to someone without a gift or keep the gift that they have. If the player chooses to donate their opened gift on their turn, they must open a wrapped gift.
Continue the white elephant gift exchange game by following the prompt words from the story. Read the entire story even if all the gifts have been opened. If all the gift are not opened, keep re-reading the story until all gifts are opened and the story comes to an end. When the final story is completed, the gifts will have found their home.
