  1. 1. DETS 9-12 Subcommittee August 20, 2003 Curriculum Content This is an outline of the 9-12 Subcommittee Diabetes Curriculum content to be developed. The topics listed below will guide the development of lessons. Total time required for teachers or schools to complete all the lessons has not been determined. The lessons will be designed as supplemental to existing curriculum in the areas of Health, Biology, and Social Studies. Lessons will be designed for sequential presentation in a school, or they may be used individually as a teacher wishes to integrate the topic into his or her yearly or semester curriculum. I. Three major Content and Process Units identified: 1. Introduction - Health Education 2. Feedback & Control 3. Genetics II. The major units each contain a variety of lessons. The introductory Health Unit contains five lessons: a. Culture & History b. The Cell c. Food circulation through the blood d. Energy production and utilization e. Careers The Feedback and Control Unit contains six sections, each having one or more lessons: a. Cellular mechanisms for glucose/insulin feedback and control b. Organs and Systems structure and feedback c. Family feedback loops d. Community level feedback loops e. Experience Level of Health Disparities (Communities over time) f. Careers The Genetics/DNA component has five sections a. Sub cellular mechanisms b. Genetic effects on person c. Genetic effects on society d. Pharmaceutical products of genetics research e. Careers III. The structure of the lessons follows a general lesson plan format currently being refined by the 9-12 Diabetes sub-committee, e.g., the Introductory Lesson.
