HDR Imaging for n00bs

  1. 1. HDR Imaging for n00bs by Paul @Stammy Stamatiou
  2. 2. High Dynamic Range
  3. 3. Original Intent more accurately display what the human eye can see More Commonly Seen aesthetically pleasing yet non-realistic tonal ranges
  4. 4. how i got into HDR
  5. 5. Mac, PC, whatevs Camera with ✓auto-bracketing ✓save to RAW (most digital SLRs & Canon P&S with CHDK) whatcha need
  6. 6. Highly Recommended Tripod (or a freakishly steady hand) “don’t rely on software to align your shots” Stammy says:
  7. 7. Most HDR images are composed of 3 photos taken at different exposures 0 EV +2 EV -2 EV HDR (FTW!)
  8. 8. ✓Aperture Priority mode ✓Auto-Exposure Bracketing to 3 shots (usually a button labeled “BKT”) ✓ Auto bracketing set to AE only ✓EV to ~1-2 (tinker with it) Camera Setup ATDC lives here don’t park behind here
  9. 9. Camera Setup ✓Image Quality to RAW ✓Self-timer to 3 shots and 2 or so second delay ✓Shooting mode: Continuous+Timer moving people = HDR “ghosting”
  10. 10. Shootin’ Tips ✓Start with aperture like f/8 ✓Low ISO! (any noise or grain present gets amplified by the HDR process) chez stammy
  11. 11. What to shoot? not n00b friendly bodies of water, moving cars, nature landscapes on a windy day, poorly lit subjects, angry monkeys “start off by shooting well-lit, static subjects” Stammy says:
  12. 12. so you have lots of shots... what software to use? free five-finger discount •qtpfsgui (my free pick) •FDRTools Basic •Photomatix Basic •Picturenaut •GIMP + plugins •Photomatix Pro (best 4 nublets) •Photoshop CS 2+ •EasyHDR •Photogenics HDR •FDRTools Advanced TX flag
  13. 13. making the HDR image! • “Generate HDRI” and import your 3 exposures • Your HDR image is made.. and looks quite ugly
  14. 14. so there’s this thing called tone mapping Reveals details in highlights and shadows contained in the original HDR image by selectively adjusting tonal range to something your monitor can fully display. stammy’s whip
  15. 15. detail enhancing (more exaggerated, badass) tone compressing (more realistic) @brookenovak charges stammy late fees
  16. 16. needs windows stammy-tested top speed: 118mph n00b-friendly instructions tinker with sliders until you like the way it looks
  17. 17. advanced n00bs Make an HDR of moving subjects with a single RAW file if this was a regular 3-shot HDR... horrible ghosting
  18. 18. in a nutshell ‣Multiple shots at different exposures ‣HDR processing ‣Tone map until it looks good ‣???? ‣Profit!
  19. 19. going pro? 4 shots * 3 exposures each = panoramic HDR
  20. 20. “Follow @Stammy on Twitter! 11,588 people can’t be wrong.” Stammy says: Read more about HDR on PSTAM.com
