IMPORTANT DATES TO KNOW AND MEMORIZE!!!

                 January 11th
              University Application Deadline
                 For Equal Consideration

                 February 1st
                College Application Deadline
                  For Equal Consideration

Equal Consideration means to be considered on an equal basis with
other applicants. This is NOT a deadline for Early Admissions.
Match the Celebrity to their Major in University

Bill Cosby English

Meg Ryan Education

Brad Pitt Mathematics

Renee Zellwegger Journalism

Michael Jordan Advertising
Your major will not always determine your career.

Even though some career areas require that you
major in a specialized field, many career areas do
not require a specific academic area.

From the examples in this exercise, you can quickly
see that your major can take you in different
directions, and your experiences outside of the
lecture hall will introduce you to career areas that
might not be directly related to your academic
focus.
4 TIPS TO DOING APPLICATIONS

     1 – Give yourself options

       2 – Do your research

3– Get it in – and make it count

4 – Don’t get killed by deadlines
Click on the word Apprenticeships to watch the video
The 4 ways to enter into Apprenticeships

 Find an employer who is willing to train you in your
preferred trade. This will then involve an application
process with your employer to the Ministry of Training,
    College and Universities. Websites like
apprenticesearch.com can help with finding employers.

 Enter a Pre-Apprenticeship Training program. When
completed, you will have the skills and experience to make
you more attractive to potential employers.

 Complete a college diploma that relates to your preferred
trade. (more details on college applications coming!)

 Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP). Students
may register to become apprentices while finishing high
    school.
College
Applying to College – the Basics!

 Last year more than 160,000 students applied to
    College in Ontario!

 Ontario College Application Service
     www.ontariocolleges.ca

 Program Choices – 5 in total (no more than 3 from
any one school). You need to order your choices.
This won’t determine your acceptance, but it is
    used for research purposes.
Things you need to HAVE

 OEN # (found on your credit counselling summary
or ask your guidance counsellor – or if doing your
applications with Jessica she will have it)

 Full address, phone number and email

 Social Insurance Number

 Method of Payment (Visa, Mastercard, Amex,
    cheque or Pathways Scholarship, LAHS)

 Your 5 choices – remember a choice is school +
    program
Application Fees

The fee for the application is $95.

 The application fee covers the application
processing costs, as well as any college or program
changes made to the original application.

 There are NO exemptions from the application
    fee.

 There is a $25 fee for returned items. This fee
applies to all items returned to us for any reason
including NSF, a closed account, stopped payment,
    post-dated
Let’s take a look at
 the application in

             video
Supplementary Applications

 Lots of Programs require additional components to
the application. These might include a portfolio,
    interview, testing or audition.
 Ex – George Brown’s Fashion Techniques Course
requires a sewing test on an industrial machine

 Collaborative Degrees are Programs that are
divided between a College and University. Each
school will require to apply to either the college,
    university or your choice.
Testing – Pre-Admissions

 Some schools require testing to ensure that
students have the required skills to be successful
    in their program of choice.

 Other programs that are “highly competitive” will
require testing as a way of "ranking" and may be
    used to make admission decisions

 There is a fee for most pre-admissions testing and
    depends on the school
After you apply

 Print your Application Verification Summary and keep it on
file. Make sure to keep your email containing your username
and password. You will need this to login to your account.

 February 1st, 2012 – earliest release of offers by the
    colleges to all applicants

 May 1st, 2012 – applicants must confirm their acceptance of
    their offer by this date.

 June 15th, 2012 – earliest date that applicants will be
    required to pay tuition fees

 If you change schools after first semester you must arrange
for your new school to inform OCAS about your change of
school. This will ensure your academic information will be
    sent to OCAS.
University
Applying to University– the Basics!

 Last year more than 380,000 students applied to
    Universities in Ontario!

 Last year the University of Toronto had over
70,106 applications and was the most applied to
school in Ontario. Only 11,548 were admitted to
    an undergraduate degree!

 Ontario University Application Centre
     www.ouac.on.ca
     Two types of applications
        101 – current Secondary School Applicants
        105 – all other Undergraduate Applicants
Things you need to HAVE

 OUAC PIN#, Student # and School# - This will all be
on your PIN Access Letter you get from your
Guidance Department – without this pin letter you
    can not begin your applications

 Full address, phone number and email

 Social Insurance Number

 Method of Payment (Visa, Mastercard, Amex,
    cheque or Pathways Scholarship, LAHS)

 Your 3+ choices – remember a choice is school +
    program
Application Fees

The base applications fee for three program
                   choices is $125.
            Each additional choice is $42

 Applicants may apply to as many programs as they
wish; however they are limited to a maximum of
three programs at any one University. Some
universities may further limit the number of
programs (ie University of Toronto). Choices must
    also be ranked.

 Payments can be made by Visa, MC, Amex,
Pathways Scholarship, online banking, cheque or
    money order
Let’s take a look at
 the application in
      action...
             Click on the word
             GO to watch the
             video
Supplementary Applications

 Lots of Programs require additional components to
the application. These might include a portfolio,
    interview, testing or audition.
 EX: York’s Theatre BFA requires an audition

 Supplementary Applications have varying due
dates based on the school and the program so
make sure you check these things CAREFULLY!

 Supplementary Applications can also require a fee
English Language Testing

 If you are applying to an undergraduate program
you must meet the English language requirements
by completing one of the following:
 four full years of study in Canada in English or French
      at the secondary-school level;
 four full years of study at the secondary-school level in
English in a country where English is a primary
language or where English is the primary language of
      instruction;
 If you have not completed your schooling in an
English speaking school you will need to complete
    an English Language Proficiency Test.
Requirements for this test vary by institution and
you can see Jessica for more assistance.
After you apply

 Print the page with your OUAC Reference Number and keep a
copy on file. All correspondence will require this number

 One day after submitting your payment go online and review
your application for accuracy. It is recommended that changes
not be made to your application after Feb 7th, 2012

 May 29th, 2012 – the latest date by which all secondary school
    applicants shall expect a response.

 June 1st, 2011 – earliest date that applicants will be required
to pay financial commitment fees (ex. Residence deposits)

 If you change schools after first semester you must arrange for
your new school to inform OUAC about you change of school.
This will ensure your academic information will be sent to
    OUAC.
WHY book an Appointment
 Assistance for filling out your applications and make sure you
are not applying for something you have no chance of getting
    into!

 If you want to use your Pathways Scholarship to pay for your
applications. Any payments made on your own will not be
    reimbursed.
**Note – even if you joined Pathways this year and have not earned a scholarship
the cost of your application fees will still be covered by Pathways.

 If you choose to use your own method of payment, you can still
book an appt. If you choose to do your applications completely
on your own that is fine too!

 We can keep your passwords and usernames on file so that you
won’t lose them, and will be able to remember them when it
comes time to accept your programs

 Parents are encouraged to attend!
HOW to book an Appointment

 Appointments will begin MONDAY NOVEMBER 14th

 Appointments are 1 hour in length and are from 4-6pm
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and 4-7pm on Wednesdays

 Over the holiday school break and the PD Day on Dec
9th daytime appointments will be available Monday to
Thursday (when the office is not closed). These appts
will go fast so book early!

 Each student will be given only ONE appointment time.
If you miss it, you are on your own. Grade 12’s who
completed the application process are encouraged to
do their applications and see Jessica for payment only.
