  • 1. The Pearson Years The 60s and the new Canada
  • 2. Mike Pearson
    • Lester B. Pearson was a Canadian diplomat
    • Helped to create the United Nations
    • During the Suez Crisis, he had the idea of creating peacekeepers
    • Won the Noble Peace Prize
    • Led the Liberal Party and became Prime Minister in 1963
  • 3. Minority Government
    • For the next five years, he was Prime Minister, but always in a minority government
    • Had to work with either the Conservatives or the NDP
    • Despite this, his government was very active, bringing a number of changes
  • 4. Changing the Flag
    • Most obvious change was to give Canada a new flag
    • Until then Canada was using a version of the British flag, Pearson thought Canada should have its own
  • 5.
    • Conservative Party wanted to keep the old flag
    • Committee was formed to examine the options
