Read the text and answer the comprehension questions: (15 points) The cowboy is the hero of many movies. He is, even today, a symbol of courage and adventure. But what was thelife of the cowboy really like? The cowboy’s job is clear from the word cowboy. Cowboys were men who took care of cows and other cattle. Thecattle were in the West and in Texas. People in the cities of the East wanted beef from these cattle. Trains could take thecattle East. But first the cattle had to get to the trains. Part of the cowboy’s job was to take the cattle hundreds of milesto the railroad towns. The trips were called cattle drives. A cattle drive usually took several months. Cowboys rode for sixteen hours a day.Because they rode so much, each cowboy brought along about 8 horses. A cowboy changed horses several times eachday. The cowboys had to make sure that the cattle arrived safely. Before starting on a drive, the cowboys branded thecattle. They burned a mark on the cattle to show who they belong to. But these marks didn’t stop rustlers. Rustlers madethe dangerous trips even more dangerous. Even though their work was very difficult and dangerous, cowboys did not earn much money. They were paid badly.Yet cowboys liked their way of life. They lived in a wild open country. They lived a life of adventure and freedom. 1. How much did you pay _____ the tickets?III1. Read the text and answer the comprehension questions: (15 points) Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don’t talk. Gestures are the “silent language” of everyculture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say. It is important to know thebody language of every country or we may be misunderstood. In the US, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If thehandshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug. Space is important to Americans. When people talk to each other, they stand two and a half feet away at an angle, sothey are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will moveback to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me”, or “Excuse me”. Americans like to look the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite. For Americans, thumbs up, means yes, very good or well done. Thumbs down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you aresigning a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger. Americansshake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them. Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing. If you don’t know what to do, the safest thing to do is tosmile. 1. Why is it important to know the body language of a country? ________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ 2. When do Americans feel uncomfortable during a conversation? ______________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ 3. Why must a person not stand too close while talking to an American? _________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ 4. What American customs seem strange to you? ___________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ 5. Give two examples of bad manners in your country. For example, in the USA it is not polite to ask a person how much he or she earns. ____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________III.2 Writing: (15 points) Write 12 sentences, a short paragraph about what advice you would give someone coming to live and work in your country. _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________
