  • 2. Welcome. In 1994 South Africa became a democratic country after years of colonial and racist domination when the country embarked on the road to reconciliation to build a nation united in its diversity. This year, 2010 will be an important year in South Africa’s histori- cal development. Over the past 16 years, South Africa has shown the world that it is possible to emerge from conflict to the creation of a prosperous, peaceful and stable multiparty constitutional democracy. The hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup has given us a unique opportunity to make this event into an important marketing project by working together to build South Africa into a powerful base for economic cooperation and growth. We need to ensure that the World Cup should enhance our global competiveness, which will contribute to our long-term economic growth for sustainable job creation and wealth creation opportunities. In all of this, tourism plays a crucial role, which can be described as our “new gold” which can assist us create jobs for develop- ment and economic growth. Unlike the real gold, tourism is a never-ending and inexhaustible resource for social cohesion. Tourism in South Africa provides us with sustainable employment for youth and women in urban and rural communities. We there- fore welcome the support and cooperation of SIPPO, which is helping South Africa’s small and medium tourism enterprises to find market access in Switzerland.
