    • Company Car Drivers' Aberrant Behaviors, Safety Attitudes And Safety Climate Perceptions
      Musicant Oren
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel
      August, 2011
      Acknowledgments:
Edna Schechtman and Hillel Bar-Gera for their wise advice
Ran-Naor Foundation of road safety research in Israel
    • Motivation for this study
Company car drivers are at a higher risk:
Driver factors: Safety attitudes and Behaviors while driving.
Work factors : High mileage, fatigue, time pressure and organizational safety climate.
Are there interactions between Behaviors, Attitudes and Safety Climate perceptions?
      Correlations
      Subgroups of drivers
    • Measurement
      Measurement tools have been proposed:
      Driver Behavior Questionnaire
      Driver Attitude Questionnaire
      Safety Climate Questionnaire
      Measurement problem
Overall questionnaires’ length is too long: drivers are not willing or able, to devote the time necessary to accurately complete them (Davey et al, 2007)
    • Analysis Process
      34 items , Six factors, Cronbach alpha: 0.61 - 0.91
    • Correlations
      (6)
      * P<0.05, ** P<0.01, *** P<0.001
All variables other than violations were scored in the direction of safety (higher score indicates a "safer" attitude)
    • Clusters of Drivers
      Cluster 1 (N=28) & Cluster 2 (N=37)
      Similar:
      High involvement in traffic violations
Negative attitudes towards speed & alcohol use
      Negative views about management commitment
      Cluster 3 (N=45)
      Low involvement in traffic violations
      Positive safety attitudes
      Positive safety climate perceptions
      Different:
      law enforcement : Cluster 1 < Cluster 2
      Driver ability : Cluster 1 < Cluster 2
      Work pressure : Cluster 1 >Cluster 2
    • Summary
      Company car drivers questionnaire
      Multiple safety-related factors
      Relatively brief
Correlations between Safety attitudes, safety climate perceptions and reported behavior
      Cluster analysis suggest on subgroups
Limitations: Small sample size ,One organization
