  • There is no question that as the global economy resumes the unprecedented growth that took place in the 20th century that we are increasingly operating in an economy that is constrained by resources, including energy, and will need to manage the impact thereof that include adverse impacts on the global climate. Fundamentally, however, this is new business driver also present an opportunity, an opportunity: to deliver new operational efficiencies that has the potential of delivering measurable cost saving opportunities related to initiatives that reduce a company’s environmental impact (think energy, waste, paper, …) to pursue new market opportunities, developing new products and services that have the potential for enormous market shifts (think hybrid vehicles) to enhance the value of your companies brand, or at least protect it, by being a leader in sustainability (think Wal-Mart who has gone from constantly fending off social and labor issues to being the undisputed global retail leader for sustainability). In addition to the strengthened brand and reputation there is also the potential for improved stakeholder relations and to respond to rapidly increasing regulations in an efficient and dependable manner so as to minimize associated costs and risk exposureThe key message here is that this is a value creation opportunity. A recent study by AT Kearney clearly showed that environmental sustainability leaders outperformed their peers from a fiscal perspective.AMR Research also clearly sees this new imperative as a strategic opportunity that goes beyond compliance.
