  • Oracle ’s storage portfolio spans the broadest spectrum of storage products in the market. From purpose-built engineered systems such as Exadata/Exalogic for extreme performance, to ZFS Storage Appliance for industry-leading Analytics and highest performance in its class, to Pillar Axiom with patented QoS and with true performance scalability with distributed RAID, to Tape which deliver best TCO, scalability and highest RAS. In addition, a rich set of both software and hardware components that enhance the value of the storage solutions. Oracle continues to make investments in refreshing and enhancing our storage product lines to ensure that they meet and exceed customer requirements. In this presentation we will cover the ZFS Storage Appliance, Pillar Axiom, Tape, Flash, and corresponding software components.
  • The Oracle storage portfolio has been engineered to optimize the Oracle stack – in terms of performance, efficiency, scale, management, and data availability. For the SPARC line , Supercluster, and Engineered Systems like Exadata, we have invested R&D to provide backup and recovery solutions for our servers and engineered systems. We have engineered our ZFS product directly into Exadata as well as built backup appliances to protect Exadata data and support for long term data retention and archive in Tape. This week we are announcing new Axiom and ZFS Storage Appliance plug-ins Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c and Oracle Virtual Manager/Storage Connect. From a single EM interface, a database administrator can now manage Oracle storage – not just monitoring - but managing provisioning, copy services, and data services. For our 12c databases, we have engineered the unique ability to leverage product feature sets like HCC, RMAN, and ASM that can drive query performance by as much as 16x, save space and power by 5x; We are leveraging native InfiniBand for extreme performance and data exchange with Oracle ’s engineered systems (like Exadata). In the future Infiniband will be available in Axiom storage as well. We are announcing today new Platinum Services for the Pillar Axiom 600 – to continue to optimize responsiveness, patch transparency and control, and fault monitoring. Optimizing service on the same level as our engineered systems and Exadata products. We are unlocking the value of the Oracle stack through engineering innovation.
  • Source of EMC data is IDEAS International with External verification on State of New York Net Contract Price List (50% discount). http://www.emc.com/collateral/emcwsca/master-price-list.pdf Oracle is the leader in database innovation and management. With the major advance of Hybrid Columnar Compression – where you can compress data up to 50x – we see: queries running on average 7x faster, space and power savings 5x you can now run more work with highest performance with the smallest footprint. Only available on 11gR2 and 12c, HCC can only operate with Oracle storage – ZFSSA and Pillar Axiom 600 and Exadata. No one else. Engineered integration between the Oracle database and Oracle storage, real case studies show 20 to 1 compression which results in a cost savings of $28M.
  • Today we are announcing new storage plug-ins for Axiom and Sun ZFS Storage Appliance to 12c Oracle Enterprise Manager. Lets take a look at what that means to you. <CLICK> next slide
  • This slide automatically builds from the 12c entry picture to an EM interface to the Axiom . Major points: DBA’s can manage storage Provision, protect, align to app priority, secure data All from a single pane of EM glass - consolidate management of the Oracle stack. Single Pane of glass Same look, touch and feel: One UI to learn and interact with The obvious place to provision and manage storage for an Oracle DB is within the DB management structure. Faster, more accurate provisioning. Monitoring of performance issues. Where better than within the structure of the application that has the problem? The DB knows what it needs, why guess? Simply and easily “feed” it the storage and IOPS it requires. The VALUE of the RED STACK Let’s look at the same concept for Oracle Virtual Machine environments <CLICK> Next slide
  • Where do you want to be? Blindly “pushing” storage into a virtual environment you can’t see our understand from an external UI, Or from within your environment intelligently “pull” storage resources in as needed? The Application (Consumers of storage) are managed by OVM, shouldn’t their storage be also? Faster problem and performance resolution: Visibility from the application, through the OS to the Storage. All disparate piece parts tied together. Common terminology, common commands. Another example of the Red Stack. One UI, One interface, One set of commands. The power of ONE.
  • Enterprise Database and Application environments require Enterprise class service for the storage infrastructure. Today we are announcing the same level of service for the Pillar Axiom 600 storage system you get with the Oracle engineered systems such as Exadata. This gives you: 24/7 fault monitoring High level responsiveness: 5 Minute fault notification 15 minute restoration and escalation to development 30 minute joint debugging Escalation process and hotline with dedicated escalation managers Update and patch proactively to optimize performance and minimize systems operations Quarterly patch plans provided – a look ahead and plan to reduce any surprises and provide transparency to whats going to happen
  • Source: Oracle Testing, published in “ A Hybrid Columnar Compression Case Study with External NAS and SAN Storage” by Art Licht, April 2012
  • Flash performance based on comparing the Intel 910 PCIe card (7200 Read IOPS/W, 3000 Write IOPS/W, 5200 R/W IOPS/W) to the Hitachi Ultrastar 15K600 which has a 3.4ms seek time or ~300R/W IOPS at 16.6W for 18 IOPS/W: Ratio is ~280x Tape energy use based on Clipper Group “In Search of the Long-Term Archiving Solution — Tape Delivers Significant TCO Advantage over Disk”, December 2010. Tape life based on paper by Horison Information Strategies, “The Era of Colossal Content”, September 2012
  • Another key element of Oracle’s push to improve operational efficiency is our Oracle Optimized Solutions program. Oracle Optimized solutions build on the efficiencies we achieve with our storage products and apply them to specific, high-value use cases. In particular, we look at how specific workloads exercise the hardware and software stack from applications through the database, system requirements and all the way to the backend archive. We then identify the best resources from our software and systems portfolio, and provide sizing guidelines and complete bills of materials that allow you to quickly go from concept to implementation. What our customers have found when deploying complex environments like large Oracle E-Business Suite instances or Enterprise Cloud Infrastructure solutions is that the use of pre-sized, pre-tested Oracle Optimized Solutions significantly reduces their risk profile and data center integration costs.
  • For each of the areas we discussed earlier, and for broader based Oracle Optimized Data Center, our solutions provide three basic benefits. With Oracle Optimized Storage, we enable you to permanently shrink the amount of storage you need, we allow you to run your databases and applications faster, and we reduce your risk profiles from both implementation and operational perspectives. So, no matter what mix of database storage, SAN storage, NAS storage and Tape that is appropriate for your environment we will allow you to do more while spending less and simplifying your environment.
