Leveraging Oracle Database Partitioning and Hybrid Columnar Compression with Pillar Axiom QoS

Database partitioning was designed to enable old, stale data to be allocated to separate tablespaces to improve performance for more-recent “hot” data. So older data need not reside on fast, expensive media. The patented quality of service (QoS) of Oracle’s Pillar Axiom storage system enables partitioned data to both be moved to low-cost, high-capacity media and dynamically manage storage system resources (CPU, cache, I/O priority) so hot partitions receive a higher QoS (better performance) compared to “archive” partitions. Now add Oracle Database’s Hybrid Columnar Compression feature to the mix, and you have very space-efficient storage with an optimal allocation of resources to meet your business objectives at the lowest cost and highest performance. Have your cake and eat it too!

  • Partitioning can improve the performance of certain queries or maintenance operations by an order of magnitude. Moreover, partitioning can greatly reduce the total cost of data ownership, using a "tiered storage" approach of keeping older relevant information still online on low cost storage devices. 
  • Let’s recap for a moment, by partitioning databases based on the lifecycle of the information managed and compressing historical data, IT departments can reduce their dependency on high end storage, reduce their incremental storage costs, keep more data online for longer periods of time while improving the performance of applications that access large databases. Combining Oracle Advanced Compression and Partitioning Optionsprovide IT departments, running Oracle Applications with a cost-effective information management by better optimizing storage infrastructures while also maintaining the performance and scalability that businesses require. 
  • An example of how this vision translates to value is seen in Oracle’s Hybrid Columnar Compression which originated in the Exadata product and is now available in both ZFSSA and Pillar Axiom. Early benchmarks are projecting 3-5x faster plus clear efficiency gains versus primary competitors, NTAP and EMC.HCC only works with Oracle storage, a distinct differentiator and a clear example of the value of integration.
  • Similar to the QoS example seen before, the Axiom storage system provides a QoS model that not only allows you to optimally place data on drives, but allows you to provide the adequate resources to service the critical business application data. The animation on the left shows how other vendors typically process I/O. Note that the important application (RED) IO will have to wait for other applications to receive their IO.The Axiom prioritizes IOs via multiple queues with 5 priority levels. This means important applications receive IO service at higher rates since QoS allows higher priority IOs to be processed ahead of others. The Axiom will reduce IOs to lower priority applications so higher priority applications will get up to 6x more IOs executed over time.
  • Pillar Axiom QoS allows you to provide a deterministic IO prioritization for the applications - instead of the archaic FIFO model and equal resource allocation
  • With QoS, you are allowed to have multiple service levels – just like the plane. If everyone was equal - like a low budget airlines – your service level (and your performance) suffers – but you expect it. QoS enables multi-tenancy or the ability to provide multiple service levels. So, you can have a Tier 1 OLTP application, a business critical Exchange environment and a tertiary archive application all on the same storage system – with distinct QoS or performance levels. The ability to store multiple application data on the same storage system (without storage silos) allows you to increase the utilization of the system – get all the seats full. This allows you to reduce you CapEx (less storage to buy) and OpEx (less storage to manage – administer, power, cooling) in the process.
  • Use Cases In anticipation of heavy activity required in the last week of quarter, administrator needs to move database LUNs from High Priority to PremiumA weekend before end of quarter, on Friday the admin initiates a data migration with Maximize Migration Performance since activity on system is minimalTo run various batch process at the end of the quarter the Reporting Instances of the database are moved from Archive to LowTo minimize impact on Production, the admin selects Minimize System Performance Impact option
