  • BioMed Central developed the concept of Open Repository in the summer of 2004. As a pioneer of the open access movement BioMed Central identified the demand within the community for a repository service and Open Repository was launched.Using the open source software DSpace, Open Repository manages and maintains all the content contained within client repositories ensuring greater visibility for organizations and allows administrators time and freedom to concentrate on populating the repository. Our community is within many different markets
  • GREATER – IR’s being used as an internal collaboration tool for researchers via IR’s enhanced researcher pagesAUDITS - More inst looking at IR’s to fulfil this needTAXPAYERS – mandatesGAIN ACCESS – previously stored internally
  • INTRODUCE CASE STUDY – HelmholtzCenter for Infectious Diseases
  • BERLIN – gaining members and strength – increasing OA mandates – policies and implementation of IR’s for its members
  • REGULARLY – via an OA newsletter & regular workshops. These advise their staff about new developments – strategies & ideas and help to establish the Helmholtz OA communityThe community includes dedicated scientists who act as editors & members of a review board of OA journals & developments
  •  They advise their users on Open Access publishing opportunities and copyright issues. They also actively promote the use of OA publications.First they tried to install a repository on our own with Open Source Software. Butrealized, that it is not easy to run a webserver with all that administrational and security work. Also the restrictions from our computing department are very strong in dividing the web from our intranet by a proxy. They could not support the IR - Also the setup of a Repository turned out to be much work.Looking for a hosting solution. But at that time (2004/2005) there was no possibility to do this in Germany. The university libraries were just setting up their own repositories and were not offering/opening their repositories for small institutes.
  • At the moment the IR is fully funded from the library budget but theyare looking for a solution to put this into the institutional overhead costs.
  • These open accessible databases contain a significant and steadily growing share of the scientific output of the Helmholtz Association.
