There are several key technology trends impacting business that we keep
hearing about:

The OD & HR field has been comparatively behind the curve with
embracing these new technologies compared to other parts of
organisations. But this is changing, and the three trends I see impacting
this space are:
•Social Organisation
•Business Intelligence/ Analytics
•Cloud Computing

So what do these newfangled terms mean?

So what do these newfangled terms mean?
None of these terms have formal or technical definitions. However,
simply put:
•Social Organisation
• Often assumed to mean the use of social media. However, a social
organisation uses mass collaboration utilizing social media
platforms to enable their employees, customers, suppliers and all
other stakeholders to participate directly in the creation of value.

So what do these newfangled terms mean?
• Business Intelligence/ Analytics
• The intelligent analysis and use of available information to make
better informed business decisions. This should lead to the
creation of numerous small and significant improvements/
competitive advantages that lead to notable organisational
performance improvements.
• Includes: big data and data visualization.
• Cloud Computing
• Hosted Files, Services or Software. The ability to run software,
services or open files on one or more connected computers at
once without the need for it to be installed on the local
computer(s).
• More recently: “private cloud”, “public cloud” or “hybrid cloud”

• Several “social organisations” are collaborating with their customers
to drive new products and services via social media channels.
• 2013 has marked the tipping point where the majority of employees
now are familiar with social media and expect to use it in a work
context.
• How can OD & HR make the most of this?
