    Started in ancient times as early as 11,000 years ago
    Lagos, Portugal, was the first slave market created for the sale of imported African slaves 
    Brought from Northern America
    Southern white skinned people brought and owned black skinned slaves
    Slaves obeyed every command given

    Racial Discrimination against blacks
    In novel, blacks are accused though innocent
    In novel, blacks are cruelly treated and are supposed to obey the whites.

    April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865
    Southern States( Southern United States
    Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, west Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland and Delaware.
    Abraham Lincoln was the one who proclaimed war against the southern states.
    Fought because of gaining rights and freedom of black slaves.
    Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House

    Relation to the book.
    Atticus fought in court for Tom Robinson although he was white and Tom Robinson was black. He fought for Tom Robinson’s innocence and did not discriminate Tom Robinson
  • 7. Jim Crow Laws
    It is a song name, not a person
    Local and State laws that were used in America during 1876 to 1965.
    Separated the whites from the blacks.
    Whites were given advantages in education, work, etc.
    Blacks were unfairly treated and were very unhappy.
    Relation to the book
    Tom Robinson was accused by a white who was lying and Tom Robinson lost the case although it was clear that he was wrongly accused.

    Political movement of equality before the laws, improving legal rights
    Chicano Movement
    Sought political empowerment and social inclusion of the Mexicans
    American-Indian Movement
    Violent protest gatherings resulting in 2 deaths.

    President John F Kennedy supported it
    Outcome is African Americans are as equal as whites
    Relation to book
    Atticus fights for tom Robinson as though he is a white, treating him like he would treat a white.
  • 10. Montgomery Bus Boycott and Scottsboro trials
    Both fought for the rights of blacks because the transport system was biased towards the whites
    In Scottsboro trials, a black man was accused of rape that he did not commit
    Similar to the book under same conditions, both black men were accused of rape they did not do.
