Slavery<br />Started in ancient times as early as 11,000 years ago<br />Lagos, Portugal, was the first slave market created for the sale of imported African slaves <br />Brought from Northern America<br />Southern white skinned people brought and owned black skinned slaves<br />Slaves obeyed every command given <br />

The Civil War <br />April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865<br />Southern States( Southern United States<br />Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, west Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland and Delaware.<br />Abraham Lincoln was the one who proclaimed war against the southern states.<br />Fought because of gaining rights and freedom of black slaves.<br />Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House<br />
  6. 6. The Civil War <br />Relation to the book.<br />Atticus fought in court for Tom Robinson although he was white and Tom Robinson was black. He fought for Tom Robinson’s innocence and did not discriminate Tom Robinson<br />

Jim Crow Laws<br />It is a song name, not a person<br />Local and State laws that were used in America during 1876 to 1965.<br />Separated the whites from the blacks.<br />Whites were given advantages in education, work, etc.<br />Blacks were unfairly treated and were very unhappy.<br />Relation to the book<br />Tom Robinson was accused by a white who was lying and Tom Robinson lost the case although it was clear that he was wrongly accused.<br />

The Civil Rights Movement <br />Started in 1950<br />Political movement of equality before the laws, improving legal rights <br />Chicano Movement <br />Sought political empowerment and social inclusion of the Mexicans <br />American-Indian Movement <br />Violent protest gatherings resulting in 2 deaths.<br />
  9. 9. The Civil Movements<br />President John F Kennedy supported it<br />Outcome is African Americans are as equal as whites<br />Relation to book<br />Atticus fights for tom Robinson as though he is a white, treating him like he would treat a white.<br />

Montgomery Bus Boycott and Scottsboro trials<br />Both fought for the rights of blacks because the transport system was biased towards the whites<br />In Scottsboro trials, a black man was accused of rape that he did not commit<br />Similar to the book under same conditions, both black men were accused of rape they did not do.<br />
