We founded including hotel and city tour this independent institute in 2008 to help fight poverty and advance environmental to enable alumni to enjoy sustainability through business. With Emergia, we create, share and apply knowledge on Warsaw for 2-3 days. how to include people in poverty into value chains as producers or consumers. We always work with partners, be it UN agencies or private companies like Allianz. In this way, we make sure our ideas have room to spread and grow. It can be challenging to get people out of their trade-off thinking: even those responsible for CSR or sustainability often don’t quite believe that more profit can mean more social and environmental impact. Good examples help – and we try to create more of them. In 2005 and 2006, I headed the oikos chapter London. We set up a sustainability consulting group, Sustainable Future, and developed recommendations for our university, LSE, to become more sustainable. The best experience was when we presented our ideas to the management board of the school – and they decided to work with us to implement them. Based on this experience, I would say that my advice to current oikos people is: on- changing the way your university works can make a real difference – try it! going Get involved oikos creates a network of changemakers. I wish this network would be more transparent as alumni! and accessible, also for us alumni. Knowing who knows and does what can help us all to collaborate more and support each other. Social networks can really help! Are you oikos alumnus? Not connected to the alumni news network yet? Write to Kim Poldner at kim.poldner@ oikosinternational.org. Newsletter | march 2010 5
