  • THE “LAZY AND MEAN PEOPLE” LAWA law instituted on August 4thof 1933.It concerned the treatment of tramps, nomads, pimps, alcoholics and other“antisocial” groups.Created to locate and classify the “dangerous agents of society, set controlmeasures, safety and prevention.”.On July 15thof 1954 the law included the repression ofhomosexuals, also called violetas (violets).In 1970 the law was finally abolished.
  • HOMOSEXUALSDuring the dictatorship homosexuality was considered adisease and an unnatural vice that could be correctedwith electroshock therapies.Homosexual people were interrogated, minstreated and tortured.Most of them were arrested and interned in workcamps, always seperated from the rest of thepeople.During the 60s, gay culture began to appear,especially in big tourist cities.
  • GYPSIESIn the 15thcentury the first gypsies families arrived in Spain. In 1499 the firstlaw against them was signed by the Catholic Monarchs.Franco made specific rules for the gypsies repressionduring his dictatorship. When the current Democracy wasestablished, the anti-gypsy legislation was repealed. Itwas the first time in history the gypsies were recognizedin Spain. They are an ethnic group of people with anunknown origin.
  • HIPPIESThe hippie pacifist movement was originated in 1965 in California andreached Spain three years later. People from all over the world startedsettling down in Eivissa and Formentera, two Balearic Island.Between 1968 and 1970 Franco wanted to suffocate that hippie movement.They were considered anti-moral,accused of consuming drugs andbeing direspectful.They were arrestedand brought to prison.
