  • Employment Opportunities
  • 50+ million lawns totaling 20 million acres 16,000+ golf courses totaling 25 million acres
  • Merger in 2005 of Association of Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) and Professional Lawn Care Association of America (PLCAA)
  • Sod Production
  • 1960s – China – Proclamation to Remove All Signs of Capitalism (included cutting down of trees and removal of grass) 2002 – China Implemented 10 year plan to plant 170,000 square miles of trees and grass at a cost of $2.4 billion
  • Researchers in Australia found that smell of fresh-cut grass can actually lower stress. Scientists at the University of Queensland revealed a chemical released in mowed grass can help people relax and make them more cheerful. They claim the scent works directly on the brain, specifically affecting its emotional and memory areas. These same scientists are working on a perfume, which they call “eau de mow” that replicates the smell of freshly cut grass and they hope will also replicate the stress relief and memory enhancement that comes with the real thing.
  • Epic system uses the properties of capillary attraction to provide a system of sub-surface irrigation and drainage. This irrigation system consumes 50-85% less water than traditional surface or drip irrigation systems. It absorbs natural run-off and effluents, storing it for later re-use in the system. Bookmen Stacks is a 10-story residential development in downtown Minneapolis. Grass provides insulation, extends life of the roof, increases O2 production and reduces CO2. Epic system saves over 50% in typical water use. Because of the sub-surface irrigation, the green space can be more safely used, mowed, and maintained at any time. Spirit Hills Development in Lino Lakes, MN. The system filters over 50% of the stormwater from the site. The owner has been able to eliminate retention ponds and increase available lease space by 2,000 sq.ft.
  • Cambria Elementary School, California – The EPIC system was installed under 130,000 sq.ft. of turf. The entire campus, including the fields, was designed to collect all available stormwater and hardscape runoff. Under the EPIC soccer field, large pipes store up to 2 million gallons of water. The EPIC system’s storage capacity provides the school with a source of free irrigation water during the dry summer months, during which the system is also replenished with effluent from the municipal sewage treatment facility, completely eliminating the need for a fresh water irrigation source.
  • Granite Links at Quarry Hills Golf Course in Quincy, Mass.
  • Sludge Produced by Water Treatment Facilities – Scientists at University of Pretoria in South Africa determined that sludge is acceptable for sod production.
  • The third spring after planting and the lawn is just starting to take off for the spring flush. The daisies are looking good already, but the clover is still pretty thin and the yarrow is just waking up.
  • From the Song – “Big Yellow Taxi”
