Thank you Debbie and good afternoon everyone. Along with the others, I would like to thank our hosts for the conference. We have had a wonderful time and I have enjoyed my visit to Portugal very much. My presentation today focuses on how my organization, OSTI, serves its user community within the U.S. I will be discussing some of the strategies and technologies that OSTI uses to fulfill its mission.

Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)
OSTI is an organization within the U.S Department of Energy’s Office of Science
Located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee
OSTI has been in operation since 1947 and is celebrating its 60 th anniversary this year.
OSTI’s Mission:
To advance science and sustain technological creativity by making R&D findings available and useful to Department of Energy researchers and the interested public.
OSTI accelerates the discovery of knowledge!
Energy R&D Investments
The U.S. invests approximately $8.5 billion (USD) in energy-related Research & Development annually.
OSTI collects, preserves, disseminates, and leverages the scientific and technical information resources resulting from this investment.
OSTI’s strategies for accomplishing its mission include:
Collaborations within the Department of Energy to develop and maintain an efficient, state-of-the-art access and delivery system.
Partnerships with other organizations to facilitate national and international cooperation and information exchange.
OSTI’s strategies, continued
Development, delivery, and maintenance of information products and services for a variety of users.
Preservation of scientific and technical information, in tangible copies or electronically, as appropriate.
Acceleration of the diffusion of knowledge to advance scientific discovery.
OSTI Statistics:
In FY 2006, there were 44 million transactions by individuals accessing OSTI resources (doubling in the past 2 years)
OSTI Statistics
Approximately 4.1 million full-text documents were downloaded from OSTI via the Web, free of charge to users.
OSTI Collaborations
OSTI works with the Department of Energy’s National Laboratories, as well as with energy researchers at universities, colleges, and other research institutions.
OSTI tracks approximately 10,000 current research projects funded by the Department of Energy per year.
OSTI receives about 12,000 technical research reports per year.
OSTI uses an input system which allows researchers or administrative personnel to directly submit bibliographic data and/or upload electronic files for use in our databases.
OSTI Partnerships
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) / International Nuclear Information System (INIS) – since 1970.
Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDE) – since 1987.
International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI)
Various partnerships with other U.S. government agencies to provide access to science information.
OSTI’s Information Products
Science Accelerator
http://www.scienceaccelerator.gov
OSTI’s over-arching product
Users can search all OSTI’s public products with a single query
Eliminates work and time required to find quality science information in the deep web
Science Research Connection (SRC)
http://www.osti.gov/src
Delivers information to the U.S. Department of Energy community (logon required)
Includes energy research information from the U.S., as well as international information obtained through our ETDE partnership
Energy Citations Database and DOE Information Bridge
http://www.osti.gov/bridge/ and http:// www.osti.gov/energycitations /
Contains U.S. information since 1948
Over 2 million records and about 140,000 full text documents.
OSTI’s most popular products, open to public
Over 30 million accesses per year.
Science.gov http://www.science.gov/
Gateway to science information provided by U.S. government agencies.
Ability to simultaneously search databases from DOE/OSTI, National Library of Medicine (PubMed), National Agriculture Library (AGRICOLA), NASA, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and others.
Results from all databases are combined and then ranked accordingly to relevance.
E-Print Network and Science Conference Proceedings
E-Print Network ( http://www.osti.gov/eprints/ ) provides single query searching of e-print manuscripts, scholarly papers, and other scientific documents residing on web sites, as well as a deep web search across major e-print databases.
Science Conference Proceedings ( http://www.osti.gov/scienceconferences/ ) also provides a deep web search of conference papers and proceedings across various fields of science and technology.
OSTI Preservation
Historical role was preservation of paper documents
OSTI’s collection consists of over 850,000 records
About 115,000 paper documents have been digitized, and another 38,000 reports formerly in microfiche format
OSTI Innovation Advancing Science through Knowledge Discovery
Making hundreds of databases searchable with a single query.
WorldWideScience.org – A global science gateway
OSTI Innovations, continued
Incorporating personal workspace capabilities for users.
Expanding digital access to legacy (paper) documents.
