Transcript of "Endocrinology and its Glands"

  1. 1. Endocrinology and its Glands
  2. 2. Major Endocrine OrgansPituitary gland:The pituitary gland hangsfrom the base of the brain by astalk and is enclosed by bone.It consists of a hormone-producing glandular portionand a neural portion, which isan extension of thehypothalamus. Thehypothalamus regulates thehormonal output of theanterior pituitary andsynthesizes two hormonesthat it exports to the posteriorpituitary for storage and laterrelease.
  3. 3. Thyroid glandThe thyroid gland is locatedin the anterior throat.Thyroid follicles storecolloid containingthyroglobulin, aglycoprotein from whichthyroid hormone isderived.Thyroid hormone(TH) includes thyroxine (T4)and triiodothyronine (T3),which increase the rate ofcellular metabolism.Consequently, oxygen useand heat production rise.
  4. 4. Parathyroid glandsThe parathyroid glands, located on the dorsal aspectof the thyroid gland, secreteparathyroid hormone(PTH),which causes anincrease in blood calciumlevels by targeting bone, theintestine, and the kidneys.PTH is the antagonist ofcalcitonin. PTH release istriggered by falling bloodcalcium levels and isinhibited by rising bloodcalcium levels.
  5. 5. PancreasThe pancreas, located inthe abdomen close tothe stomach, is both anexocrine and anendocrine gland. Theendocrine portionreleases insulin andglucagon and smalleramounts of otherhormones to the blood.
