  3. 3.  Nicholas Andry, a French expert that treated spinal and bony deformities way back in 1741 coined the word ‘Orthopedic’, which is a branch of surgery to treat bone injuries due to sports, infections, tumours and congenital disorders.  Rheumatology is a clinical problem that involves joints, soft tissues, vasculitis, and heritable connective tissue disorders. As it is connected closely to immune system, a study on rheumatology is nothing but a study on Immunology.

A look at the global factsheet reveals the severity of the problem: • It is responsible for about 233,000 deaths annually. • At least 15.6 million people are estimated to be currently affected by RHD. • The worst affected areas are sub-Saharan Africa, south-central Asia, the Pacific and indigenous populations of Australia and New Zealand. • Up to 1 per cent of all schoolchildren in Africa, Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean region, and Latin • 50 million people in US alone are diagnosed as affected with arthritis and by 2030 this number is expected to reach 67 million. • One in every 20 citizens in US face this problem and women between the ages of 30-60 are most likely to get affected with this.
