2. Intent of the Session
• Demonstrate the benefits of using the Process Mapping
• What is the difference between Process Flow Mapping and Value
Stream Mapping?
3. Why use Process Mapping?
• Visualises business processes, which guarantees alignment between the
process and the client’s requirements
• Shows and visualises losses and wastes in processes
• Drives process improvement, such as reduction of process time, aligning
handovers and outputs
• Links critical process steps to standardised procedures, measurements and
specifications and thereby improving process control
4. What is a Process?
A group of logically related activities and tasks,
involving people, machines and procedures needed to
transform materials and/or information into a specified
product or output

Customers
Inputs from
Suppliers
5. What is Process Flow Mapping?
• Process Mapping is a technique used to describe and document processes in a
structured, step-by-step way.
• It can describe the as-is situation (current state) and the to-be situation (future,
desired state).
• A process map shows the process steps for a certain, defined subject (scope).
Process maps can be made at various levels: from a high level overview to a detailed
view.
• A process map gives a step-by-step view of how inputs are transformed into outputs.
Links to other processes are visible on a process map.
• Process mapping can be applied to all processes: a manufacturing process, an
administrative or service process.
6. Value Stream Mapping Vs Process Flow Mapping
Value Stream Mapping
• Considers the whole value stream
• Identifies non value added between
processes
• Improvements to system are usually
significant but difficult to achieve
• Enables long term strategy to be planned
Process Flow Mapping
• Concentrates on a single process
• Identifies non value added within a process
• Improvements to process are usually smaller
but easy to implement
• Enables shorter term tactical planning
