1. 3.1 Magnetism is a force that acts at a distance
Vocabulary
Magnet.- An object that attracts other objects, specially iron and steel
Magnetism.- The force exerted by a magnet
Magnetic Pole.- Parts of a magnet where magnetism is strongest
Magnetic Field.- Area around a magnet where the magnet exerts force
Magnetic Domain.- Group of atoms where magnetic fields point in the same
direction
If two like poles are placed near each other the magnetic field oppose, and the
poles repel each other.
If opposite poles are brought near each other, the magnetic field goes from one
magnet to another, and the poles attract.
Some materials are magnetic such as iron , nickel and cobalt. Steel is another
example of magnetic material which contains one or more of those elements.
Earth is a magnet. This is why a compass works. The magnetic field around Earth
acts as if there were a large bar magnet that runs through Earth’s axis.
The source of the magnetic field that surrounds Earth is the motion of its core which
is made mostly of iron and nickel.
