New numbers from Massachusetts prove that “nonprofit” is far from a synonym for “philanthropy”, and that the numbers we all have accepted are wrong by a factor of 10. If “philanthropy” is “private initiatives, for public good, focusing on quality of life, and engaged in public fundraising”, then only 3,500 out of the 38,500 Massachusetts nonprofits are philanthropic.
