Глаголы в английском языке бывают правильные – regular и неправильные - irregular
Правильные глаголы образуют прошедшее время с помощью окончания “ed”, ( V + ed ),
которое читается как:
[ d ] – после гласных и звонких согласных
play- play ed , open-open ed , close –clos ed
[ t ] – после глухих и шипящих согласных
wash- wash ed , stop- stopp ed , ask - ask ed
[ id ] - после глаголов, оканчивающихся на [ d ] и [ t ].
want –want ed , plant- plant ed , translate – translat ed , need - need ed

When we use Past Perfect Tense
Действие произошло до какого-то определенного момента в прошлом, или же два действия произошли в прошлом, но одно свершилось раньше другого.
Пример:
К 5 часам он уже закончил работу.
By 5 o’clock he had already finished the work.
К тому времени они уже достигли деревни.
By that time they had already reached the village.
Пассажир пришел на вокзал, когда поезд уже ушел.
The passenger came to the railway station when the train had already gone.
Когда я приехал в Москву, мой друг уже уехал в Петербург.
When I came to Moscow my friend had already left for St. Petersburg.

Cравните:
Present Past
I'm not hungry. I wasn't hungry.
I've just had lunch. I'd just had lunch.
The house is dirty. We haven't The house was dirty. We hadn't
cleaned it for weeks. cleaned it for weeks.
Сравните Past Perfect и Past Simple:
- Was Mary ready to go to the cinema when you came to her?
- Yes, she had been ready by the moment.
- Jack wasn't in when I phoned him. He was in his office.
- Jack had just got home when I phoned him. He had been in his office.
