<ul><li>Khasavyurt is a very interesting multinational city with its traditions and multilateral relations with other cities and regions of Dagestan and other republics of the Northern Caucasus. </li></ul><ul><li>It is known from the history of Dagestan, that Khasavyurt has always played the decisive role in cultural and political life in the Northern Caucasus being located on the butting of different regions. </li></ul>
<ul><li>So it is considered to have an important status of the “Northern Gate” to Dagestan and links our republic with other republics and states in the Caucasus. </li></ul><ul><li>Our city is of strategic importance for the peace in the republic, and is famous for inimitable cultural, historical traditions and unique national ethnic variety. The people of more than 30 nationalities live here. </li></ul>
A Brief History of Our City <ul><li>As a settlement Khasavyurt emerged at the end of the 18 century. It was a small village where the people of the kumik nationality lived. They were mostly busy with cattle breeding and vegetation. During the Caucasian wars unleashed and waged by the Tsarist Russia the first military war fortifications were built here to protect the city from the mountaineers’ attacks. </li></ul>
<ul><li>In 1846 there began the construction of a new fortress which got the name of Khasavyurt in honor of the prince Khasav, who was the richest and the most important person in the settlement at that time. </li></ul><ul><li>Khasav is known to have been in very close friendship with the Russian Region Tsarist Deputy on the Caucasus. In 1857 Khasavyurt became the regional centre of the Kumik County which was included into Terskaya area in 1861. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Even at that time the settlement was a very important military strategic point, commercial and cultural centre on the Kumik lowland, because it protected the lowland territories of Dagestan from the attacks and raids of the rebels from the mountains in Dagestan and lowland territories and mountains in Chechnya. According to the census the number of population of the city had reached 5312 people by 1897. </li></ul>
<ul><li>In 1860 the first school with only one Grade for boys was opened there, and in 1875 a school for girls was opened at the request of the noble citizens, but until the year 1921 none of the representatives of the native population had been permitted to attend classes there. </li></ul>The Former Building of a School for Girls. Famous People Guests of Khasavyurt <ul><li>A lot of famous people visited our city during the years of its existence. </li></ul><ul><li>In the 18-th century the Great Russian poet Alexander Griboyedov, being a Russian ambassador in Persia, was several times as Vazier Moukhtar here. </li></ul>Alexander Griboyedov
<ul><li>Leo Tolstoy lived in a small settlement Grebenskoye not far from Khasavyurt. He wrote his world - famous novel “The Kazaks” here, depicting the life of a young officer in a small Kazak village during the Caucasian war. <ul><li>The great Russian surgeon Nikolai Pirogov worked in a field hospital in Khasavyurt during the Caucasian War. </li></ul><ul><li>He mastered his skills as a surgeon here which he successfully used later while curing the wounded during the Crimean War. </li></ul>Nikolai Pirogov
<ul><li>On August 10, 1931 the settlement got the status of the city. </li></ul><ul><li>At that time there were several small handicraft manufactures including bricks making, lime producing, soap making, oil producing plants, and pottery workshops. </li></ul>

<ul><li>During the period of 50-70 last century there were built in the city a sewing factory, equipment producing plant, canned – food factories, reinforced concrete constructions making plant, the plant “Progress”, and the plant producing electronic equipment “Eltav”. </li></ul>
<ul><li>The citizens of Khasavyurt witnessed and experienced different political processes and events: crises, wars, reforms of any kind, migrations, deportation of the Chechens in 1943, repressions. But they survived everything and got out of all those troubles with honor and human dignity. </li></ul>
<ul><li>The citizens of Khasavyurt fought heroically on the fronts of World War II, showing mass heroism and courage. More than 6.5 thousand people out of 14 thousand who took part in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 were killed. </li></ul><ul><li>10 citizens became Heroes of the Soviet Union. </li></ul><ul><li>More than 120 thousand of people live in Khasavyurt at present. </li></ul>

<ul><li>Being two times unanimously elected Mayor of the city, Umakhanov Saigitpasha Darbishevich has recently been elected Head of the Municipal Formation – the City of Khasavyurt </li></ul><ul><li>The young and talented organizer does his best to make the life of our citizens better. The city has changed during this time. There have appeared new parks and gardens, a lot of old public buildings have been rehabilitated. </li></ul>

<ul><li>Seven new branches of institutes and universities have been opened recently. The school leavers can get higher education without going to different cities of Dagestan and Russian Federation. </li></ul><ul><li>He always looks for ways to minimize the number of unemployed in the city. There have appeared many quite modern well equipped markets where people can find work for themselves going in for commerce. </li></ul>
<ul><li>He became especially popular after the military actions in Chechnya and the events of autumn 1999, when the bands of military terrorists from Chechnya attacked Dagestani villages. Political and criminal situations in our city have been complicated with the unleash of military actions in Chechnya in 1994-1996. </li></ul>
<ul><li>He did his best not to let the interested sides aggravate the situation in the city, cause the collapse of Dagestan unity and turn Khasavyurt into “Caucasian prisoner of war”, thus turning it into a staging area for military actions against the rest part of Dagestan and Russian Federation. </li></ul>Defenders of Khasavyurt. <ul><li>In spite of all the difficulties nearly two thousand of IDP’s from Chechnya found accommodation in the collective centers of living, organized on the base of nursery schools, hostels and some public buildings specially rehabilitated for them. <ul><li>We must give credit to Umakhanov S.D., his Deputies and the whole population of the city who showed great courage and unity defending our city from Chechen military terrorists during August – September military actions at the approaches to Khasavyurt. He pays much attention to education of children. That‘s why he and his deputies are often visitors to our schools and different cultural events. </li></ul>

The Department of Education <ul><li>While speaking about our city it is necessary to say a few words about the Department of Education and about the system of education in the city on the whole. </li></ul><ul><li>Eighteen secondary schools, one lyceum, two gymnasia, four institutions of additional education and twelve nursery schools try to give children good knowledge of the subjects taught and bring up a healthy generation. </li></ul>

<ul><li>A lot of children go in for sports. About 1250 children attend trainings in four sport schools. Especially popular with them are Free-Style wrestling, boxing, Thai boxing, karate and academic wrestling. </li></ul><ul><li>We’ve got many champions of different zones, Dagestan, Russia, etc. </li></ul>
<ul><li>Khasavyurt is a unique city in religious relations too. Here you can find an Orthodox Cathedral, a Moslem Mosque, and a Synagogue that are situated very close to one another, thus being an example of religious tolerance, personifying the ideals of peace and alliance. There has been recently opened an Islamic University in our city. Those children who want to devote their life to religion enter these institutions. Very experienced religious alims (scientists) teach traditional Islam there. </li></ul>
<ul><li>A lot of famous people known both in Dagestan and in Russia were born and brought up here. Among them famous public figures, religious figures, well known scientists, poets, writers and composes, artists, outstanding sportsmen, champions of the Olympic Games. </li></ul><ul><li>It is recognized in Dagestan that Khasavyurt has become the birthplace of outstanding sportsmen. </li></ul>

<ul><li>This year we are going to hold the VIII International Free-style wrestling Tournament in Shamil Umakhanov’s memory, which is waged under the auspice of FILA. </li></ul><ul><li>It is usually held in June at the city stadium. Teams from 30 countries of the world take part in it. </li></ul><ul><li>It is held in commemoration of a young outstanding sportsman – the World Cup winner Shamil Umakhanov, who tragically died in an accident. </li></ul>
