Exploring a more sustainable management of the environment
Ing. Valentina Trombetta
It means doing your best to take care of the
environment in which you live
To bequeath to
future generations
a better world
than how we
found It
The Earth is a beautiful place we call "home" and as such it is
our duty to respect and preserve its beauty and health
Not to mention that. .
Respect for the
environment is also
respect for
ourselves, because
it is our interest to
try to improve,
where possible, the
environment in
which we live to live
better
Because we enterely
depend on what of
natural surrounds
us
No computer will
ever create food or
water or heat from
nothing, only the
Earth is able to do
so
SUSTAINABILITY
Quality of the

No traditional uses
Turism
Natural resources are the basis on
which the great civilizations as well
as small communities, have
developed their own customs,
diversifying eating habits, the arts
and literature. They are a cultural
heritage for humanity, whose
elements take on a social value,
religious and symbolic for each
culture.
Nature can create shows that the
man has not been able to
recreate, so must be protected
and cared for as well as we must
restore a monument
The man is part of a complex system, made of resources and of balances that must be guaranteed and
safeguarded in order that the man himself may survive
Roosevelt told:
« The nation which destroy its
ground, destroy itself» Not only expenses but ..
.. Even economic return
CULTURAL VALUE AESTHETIC VALUE
Protecting this equilibrium is a responsibility of
each of us
Flowering fitoplacton

With small actions of daily
life
Bringing up their
children or their
students
Also giving the example to
their peers
Even if this means often face challenges, it is also possible to
start small
Some people have an inherent sensitivity to nature and the environment,
others may achieve through greater environmental awareness
SMALL ACTIONS FOR BIG GOALS
Having respect for nature and for the environment does
not mean, at all costs, becoming a professional or an
environmental activist.
In our everyday life we could just follow some simple
rules
… and, why
not, to set a
good example
to adults, toothat, in
addition to
protecting
the
enviroment
and to
helping you
to save some
money,
will be very
useful for the
environmental
education of
children Because children
have to be
educated…
….but also adults
should be made
aware
Do not throw the waste in
the environment
Which may be these small
gestures?
The Three R’s rule
Do not leave the taps of water
open without reason
Do not leave the lights on when not needed
and use energy-saving lightbulbs
Avoid using the car when you can go on
foot or by bicycle.
It is also good for health!
AFTER ALL …JUST LITTLE….
Eating local and seasonal
products
30 Olympic swimming pools per Minute
At constant lighting, energy-saving
lightbulbs consume roughly one-fifth
of an incandescent bulb.
On average, in Italy, from an open tap
flowing 1 liter of water every 6 seconds
(10 liters per minute) considering the
number of Inhabitants
SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
Educate children and boys
to take care of the environment
If as children we directed to the Best Practices for caring
the world around us, there will be more opportunity to
raise awareness the adults of tomorrow to an attitude
Correct Against the Environment.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING
THE EXAMPLE
We have to repeat a series of correct behavior that,
growing, will become for children normal actions to be
carried out
ANYTHINGS ELSE? YES!
Go back to nature
APPRECIATE TO
PROTECT
Awareness of environmental issues is very
important, but even more important is let other
people know everything beautiful is hidden at the
bottom of an ocean or at the top of a mountain, but
also in an urban park or in your own back yard
KNOW TO
APPRECIATE
WE DON’ T APPRECIATE WHAT

AN INNOVATIVE IDEA?
Milan's Vertical Forest
The living face skyscraper
More than 2000 species between shrubs and
tall trees
Similar projects have been realized in many
other European countries and not only ... from
China to Sweden
They reduce carbon dioxide,
they capture dust,
particulates and PM10
They act as visual and
audible barriers
Everyone Knows that trees and all other plants have an aesthetic value but few
people know that they also beautify the environment and the landscape .....
They increase the value
of the property
Purify the air
They help to save
energy thanks to their
refreshing power in
summer and their
protection from cold
winds in winter
They product oxygen
They have a regulatory
effect of climate
They have a social
significance: parks
and gardens as a
meeting point
But what does it mean TERRITORY?
Is It synonymous with ENVIROMENT?
As said for urban green areas can be extended to the
whole
We could then add to the small things that we can do for the
environment to plant a tree and, for those who cannot, there are
always the houseplants
Plants are therefore a biological, environmental, energetic or
social resource and not only a street furniture that is just a cost
What are the differences?
In ecology environment defines the
set of external factors that affect an
organism's life. The term is also
understood in the broadest sense, as
the complex of natural elements
(flora, fauna, landscape) and
resources that surround a particular
organism and, in particular, humans.
And what is the role of the man?
Does it belong to the environment or to the territory?
The Territory is understood not only as a
geographical location formed by nature and the
landscape, but also a homogeneous whole of
history, traditions and cultures, which are
expressed through their artistic heritage, wine
and food traditions and the local products
ENVIROMENT TERRITORY
Perhaps it is more correct to say that man is part of the environment, such
as all living things on Earth, but has also been able to modify these
characteristics to their own advantage, therefore characterizing the
territories.
It is very important to find ways to harmonize human activities so
that they do not destroy the territory, but rather they safeguard and
valorise it
Sometimes in a positive way
Sometimes a little less
It is therefore to make the most of the natural resources by integrating them in a
synergistic and coordinated way with all the components that characterize a
Territory: culture, arts, crafts, wine and food, agriculture and, why not, the industry
Certainly no: it would be unrealistic and unachievable…. It
would mean coming back in time
Make sure that these assets have the least possibile
impact on the territory and the enviroment: that is
Ok!
Does it mean that we have to get rid of all those human activities that
may have some impact on the environment?

AN ENHANCED TERRITORY= SAFEGUARD TERRITORY
Not only from an environmental point of view, but also economic
WAY TO DISCOVER
ANCIENT TRADITIONS
Because we are the territory, we belong to it, we have «made»
it and we can only take advantage taking care of it
Men also have their roots
planted in the ground
Not just the plants!
SAFEGUARD THE TERRITORY
TO MAINTAIN OUR SECURITY
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
A well-kept territory is a more manageable territory in terms of natural risks
AN EXAMPLE TO KNOW BETTER?
TAKING A CARED WOOD BEHIND HOUSE
REDUCES FIRE RISK
The fire spreads more difficult
if the undergrowth is clean
RIDUCES
LANDSLIDES RISK
The vegetation with roots
hold the soil, preventing it
from landslides
REDUCES
FLOODS RISK

TIDY TERRITORY….
BEAUTIFUL TO SEE
= MORE TURISM
The absence of mortar or
cement allows water to drain
away
An example also from Liguria?
Coming back to speak about the territory valorisation
…..I propose You some ideas.
With the advent of the industrial revolution there has been a gradually
depopulation of the countryside accompanied by the abandonment of
thousands of hectares of agricultural land, forests and pastures, left in a
complete state of abandonment. In recent years however the trend was
reversed in fact
Old vacant lots and abandoned
pastures are back to being
productive
They are farmers, especially young
people, who, by choice, are
rediscovering the ancient crafts of
agriculture and livestock,
combining tradition and innovation,
work and respect for the
environment..
THE FIRST IDEA?
WHO ARE THE PROTAGONISTS?
Do you know that there are
the Agri-Start-up?New ideas that combine a love of the
countryside with an innovative
business vision. On which aspects do they point?
According to the FAO, 75% of agricultural crops present at the
beginning of '900 is now irretrievably lost.
At the beginning of the last century
in the world there were more than
7000 varieties of apples, today only
1000
In the past there were 2500
varieties of pears, today only
100 species.
In China, in 1949, they were
cultivated 10,000 varieties of rice,
only 1,000 in 1970.
Mexico, from 1930 to today,
has lost 80% of its maize
varieties.
Why did it come to this?
Because the agriculture is industrialized and mechanization needs uniformity and high
productivity, in other words it needs monocultures.
Since the fifties, agricultural production has gradually focused on an increasingly small
number of species and varieties, created to meet the needs of the global market, indifferent
with the bond with each territory but able to give a good production in most possible
number of environments and climates, with a good resistance to handling and transport
PLANT BIODIVERSITY
The industrialization of agriculture is based on a great deal of energy and
natural resources, unsustainable from an environmental and economic point of
view.
Why? The local varieties are characterized by a good adaptation to the
environmental conditions of their area and therefore have less need for
external inputs:
They are more hardy and therefore more resistant to environmental stresses.
FERTILIZERS
Their potentials give the best from local contexts of origin constituting
important agricultural resources
WATER PESTICIDES
Traditional varieties can support local economies thanks to their
high quality value and thus ensure the presence of man in
marginal and difficult areas.
In the Middle Ages it began to apply crop rotation
...
After a thousand years we returned to
monoculture ... has therefore returned to
always grow the same vegetable and
corn in the same field
This results in a depletion of the soil and
a greater risk of spreading diseases
Massive use of
fertilizers and
pesticides
The industrialization of agriculture has had another downside ....
The maintenance and especially the recovery of old varieties and of the
relevant crop techniques is essential for
preservation and maintenance of
landscapes and natural environments
the development of local communities and the
preservation of their gastronomic heritage
SO…
YOU MAY ALSO…
The Italian case
Forests cover a third of the Italian
territory, an area that has doubled since
the time of the unification of Italy. Today
there are in fact, in our country well 10.9
million hectares of forest. This means that
we have 12 billions of trees.
The woods are a great resource, but
differently from the past, they are more
and more areas with no control, so
impenetrable to necessary maintenance
and defense operations.
Only using timber from our forests we
could create 35 thousand new jobs. We
also consider that Italy currently
imports the 80% of the wood it uses.
They can ensure the socio-economic
development of marginal areas, rural and
mountain regions.
Actively valorised with sustainable
management practices
…RESTART TO «GROW» THE WOOD
IDEA N°2
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
Tourism that, meeting the needs and desires
of travellers, does not bring harm to the
environment, but rather it is seen as an
opportunity for the development of local
communities
Naturalistic tourism
Food and wine
tourism
Important to let people
know the typical cultivar of
a territory
tourism based on nature for which
the main motivation of the tourists is
the observation and appreciation of
nature and traditional cultures
Exploits the natural capital
of a territory
It takes advantage of the fruits
that man is able to draw from
a territory
EcomuseumsKeep in good condition hiking
and nature trails maybe creating
new ones .. and not only in the
mountains
In this way you may be able to cure and enhance the environment
obtaining gains from the activities that can be done: we are
accustomed to thinking that any activity that brings profit is harmful
because it exploits and plunders the nature, you can instead
understand that you can get the dual effect of making profitable the
territory valorising it in the mean time.
Natural parks
It would be nice not to have to resort to
retouching for reasoning in this way
It is an imperative to change the way that people have to think and to reason.
Respecting the environment should not be a burden but must become a spontaneous
and daily way of acting and thinking, only in this way we can get the maximum
benefit with the least effort... it really takes a little effort

  • 1. Exploring a more sustainable management of the environment Ing. Valentina Trombetta
  • 2.
  • 3. It means doing your best to take care of the environment in which you live To bequeath to future generations a better world than how we found It The Earth is a beautiful place we call "home" and as such it is our duty to respect and preserve its beauty and health Not to mention that. . Respect for the environment is also respect for ourselves, because it is our interest to try to improve, where possible, the environment in which we live to live better Because we enterely depend on what of natural surrounds us No computer will ever create food or water or heat from nothing, only the Earth is able to do so SUSTAINABILITY Quality of the environment Resources
  • 4. ECONOMIC VALUE Traditional uses Agricolture Forestry Breeding …. No traditional uses Turism Natural resources are the basis on which the great civilizations as well as small communities, have developed their own customs, diversifying eating habits, the arts and literature. They are a cultural heritage for humanity, whose elements take on a social value, religious and symbolic for each culture. Nature can create shows that the man has not been able to recreate, so must be protected and cared for as well as we must restore a monument The man is part of a complex system, made of resources and of balances that must be guaranteed and safeguarded in order that the man himself may survive Roosevelt told: « The nation which destroy its ground, destroy itself» Not only expenses but .. .. Even economic return CULTURAL VALUE AESTHETIC VALUE Protecting this equilibrium is a responsibility of each of us Flowering fitoplacton Barents Sea
  • 5. With small actions of daily life Bringing up their children or their students Also giving the example to their peers Even if this means often face challenges, it is also possible to start small Some people have an inherent sensitivity to nature and the environment, others may achieve through greater environmental awareness
  • 6. SMALL ACTIONS FOR BIG GOALS Having respect for nature and for the environment does not mean, at all costs, becoming a professional or an environmental activist. In our everyday life we could just follow some simple rules … and, why not, to set a good example to adults, toothat, in addition to protecting the enviroment and to helping you to save some money, will be very useful for the environmental education of children Because children have to be educated… ….but also adults should be made aware
  • 7. Do not throw the waste in the environment Which may be these small gestures? The Three R’s rule
  • 8. Do not leave the taps of water open without reason Do not leave the lights on when not needed and use energy-saving lightbulbs Avoid using the car when you can go on foot or by bicycle. It is also good for health! AFTER ALL …JUST LITTLE…. Eating local and seasonal products 30 Olympic swimming pools per Minute At constant lighting, energy-saving lightbulbs consume roughly one-fifth of an incandescent bulb. On average, in Italy, from an open tap flowing 1 liter of water every 6 seconds (10 liters per minute) considering the number of Inhabitants SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY
  • 9. Educate children and boys to take care of the environment If as children we directed to the Best Practices for caring the world around us, there will be more opportunity to raise awareness the adults of tomorrow to an attitude Correct Against the Environment. Friends THE IMPORTANCE OF THE WORLD OF ADULTS Family School THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING THE EXAMPLE We have to repeat a series of correct behavior that, growing, will become for children normal actions to be carried out
  • 10. ANYTHINGS ELSE? YES! Go back to nature APPRECIATE TO PROTECT Awareness of environmental issues is very important, but even more important is let other people know everything beautiful is hidden at the bottom of an ocean or at the top of a mountain, but also in an urban park or in your own back yard KNOW TO APPRECIATE WE DON’ T APPRECIATE WHAT WE DON’T KNOW WE DON’T PROTECT WHAT WE DON’T APPRECIATE
  • 11. Do not underestimate the importance of GREEN AREAS within cities Public Parks Avenues and flower beds Teaching gardens or vegetables garden in the schools Private gardens Important for enviroment education AN INNOVATIVE IDEA?
  • 12. Milan's Vertical Forest The living face skyscraper More than 2000 species between shrubs and tall trees Similar projects have been realized in many other European countries and not only ... from China to Sweden
  • 13. They reduce carbon dioxide, they capture dust, particulates and PM10 They act as visual and audible barriers Everyone Knows that trees and all other plants have an aesthetic value but few people know that they also beautify the environment and the landscape ..... They increase the value of the property Purify the air They help to save energy thanks to their refreshing power in summer and their protection from cold winds in winter They product oxygen They have a regulatory effect of climate They have a social significance: parks and gardens as a meeting point
  • 14. But what does it mean TERRITORY? Is It synonymous with ENVIROMENT? As said for urban green areas can be extended to the whole We could then add to the small things that we can do for the environment to plant a tree and, for those who cannot, there are always the houseplants Plants are therefore a biological, environmental, energetic or social resource and not only a street furniture that is just a cost
  • 15. What are the differences? In ecology environment defines the set of external factors that affect an organism's life. The term is also understood in the broadest sense, as the complex of natural elements (flora, fauna, landscape) and resources that surround a particular organism and, in particular, humans. And what is the role of the man? Does it belong to the environment or to the territory? The Territory is understood not only as a geographical location formed by nature and the landscape, but also a homogeneous whole of history, traditions and cultures, which are expressed through their artistic heritage, wine and food traditions and the local products ENVIROMENT TERRITORY
  • 16. Perhaps it is more correct to say that man is part of the environment, such as all living things on Earth, but has also been able to modify these characteristics to their own advantage, therefore characterizing the territories. It is very important to find ways to harmonize human activities so that they do not destroy the territory, but rather they safeguard and valorise it Sometimes in a positive way Sometimes a little less
  • 17. It is therefore to make the most of the natural resources by integrating them in a synergistic and coordinated way with all the components that characterize a Territory: culture, arts, crafts, wine and food, agriculture and, why not, the industry Certainly no: it would be unrealistic and unachievable…. It would mean coming back in time Make sure that these assets have the least possibile impact on the territory and the enviroment: that is Ok! Does it mean that we have to get rid of all those human activities that may have some impact on the environment?
  • 18. INCREASE TOURIST OFFER FOOD AND WINE TOURISM NATURALISTIC TOURISM MAKING THE BEST AND IN SUSTAINABLE WAY NATURAL RESOURCES AN ENHANCED TERRITORY= SAFEGUARD TERRITORY Not only from an environmental point of view, but also economic WAY TO DISCOVER ANCIENT TRADITIONS Because we are the territory, we belong to it, we have «made» it and we can only take advantage taking care of it Men also have their roots planted in the ground Not just the plants!
  • 19. SAFEGUARD THE TERRITORY TO MAINTAIN OUR SECURITY WHAT DOES IT MEAN? A well-kept territory is a more manageable territory in terms of natural risks AN EXAMPLE TO KNOW BETTER? TAKING A CARED WOOD BEHIND HOUSE REDUCES FIRE RISK The fire spreads more difficult if the undergrowth is clean RIDUCES LANDSLIDES RISK The vegetation with roots hold the soil, preventing it from landslides REDUCES FLOODS RISK The trees absorb 20% of rainwater and prevents branches and roots clogging rivers and streams
  • 20. REDUCING LANDSLIDES RISK TERRAZZAMENTI RAINWATER DRAINAGE INCREASING FARM LAND SURFACE TIDY TERRITORY…. BEAUTIFUL TO SEE = MORE TURISM The absence of mortar or cement allows water to drain away An example also from Liguria? Coming back to speak about the territory valorisation …..I propose You some ideas.
  • 21. With the advent of the industrial revolution there has been a gradually depopulation of the countryside accompanied by the abandonment of thousands of hectares of agricultural land, forests and pastures, left in a complete state of abandonment. In recent years however the trend was reversed in fact Old vacant lots and abandoned pastures are back to being productive They are farmers, especially young people, who, by choice, are rediscovering the ancient crafts of agriculture and livestock, combining tradition and innovation, work and respect for the environment.. THE FIRST IDEA? WHO ARE THE PROTAGONISTS? Do you know that there are the Agri-Start-up?New ideas that combine a love of the countryside with an innovative business vision. On which aspects do they point?
  • 22. According to the FAO, 75% of agricultural crops present at the beginning of '900 is now irretrievably lost. At the beginning of the last century in the world there were more than 7000 varieties of apples, today only 1000 In the past there were 2500 varieties of pears, today only 100 species. In China, in 1949, they were cultivated 10,000 varieties of rice, only 1,000 in 1970. Mexico, from 1930 to today, has lost 80% of its maize varieties. Why did it come to this? Because the agriculture is industrialized and mechanization needs uniformity and high productivity, in other words it needs monocultures. Since the fifties, agricultural production has gradually focused on an increasingly small number of species and varieties, created to meet the needs of the global market, indifferent with the bond with each territory but able to give a good production in most possible number of environments and climates, with a good resistance to handling and transport PLANT BIODIVERSITY
  • 23. The industrialization of agriculture is based on a great deal of energy and natural resources, unsustainable from an environmental and economic point of view. Why? The local varieties are characterized by a good adaptation to the environmental conditions of their area and therefore have less need for external inputs: They are more hardy and therefore more resistant to environmental stresses. FERTILIZERS Their potentials give the best from local contexts of origin constituting important agricultural resources WATER PESTICIDES Traditional varieties can support local economies thanks to their high quality value and thus ensure the presence of man in marginal and difficult areas.
  • 24. In the Middle Ages it began to apply crop rotation ... After a thousand years we returned to monoculture ... has therefore returned to always grow the same vegetable and corn in the same field This results in a depletion of the soil and a greater risk of spreading diseases Massive use of fertilizers and pesticides The industrialization of agriculture has had another downside .... The maintenance and especially the recovery of old varieties and of the relevant crop techniques is essential for preservation and maintenance of landscapes and natural environments the development of local communities and the preservation of their gastronomic heritage SO…
  • 25. YOU MAY ALSO… The Italian case Forests cover a third of the Italian territory, an area that has doubled since the time of the unification of Italy. Today there are in fact, in our country well 10.9 million hectares of forest. This means that we have 12 billions of trees. The woods are a great resource, but differently from the past, they are more and more areas with no control, so impenetrable to necessary maintenance and defense operations. Only using timber from our forests we could create 35 thousand new jobs. We also consider that Italy currently imports the 80% of the wood it uses. They can ensure the socio-economic development of marginal areas, rural and mountain regions. Actively valorised with sustainable management practices …RESTART TO «GROW» THE WOOD
  • 26. IDEA N°2 SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Tourism that, meeting the needs and desires of travellers, does not bring harm to the environment, but rather it is seen as an opportunity for the development of local communities Naturalistic tourism Food and wine tourism Important to let people know the typical cultivar of a territory tourism based on nature for which the main motivation of the tourists is the observation and appreciation of nature and traditional cultures Exploits the natural capital of a territory It takes advantage of the fruits that man is able to draw from a territory
  • 27. EcomuseumsKeep in good condition hiking and nature trails maybe creating new ones .. and not only in the mountains In this way you may be able to cure and enhance the environment obtaining gains from the activities that can be done: we are accustomed to thinking that any activity that brings profit is harmful because it exploits and plunders the nature, you can instead understand that you can get the dual effect of making profitable the territory valorising it in the mean time. Natural parks
  • 28. It would be nice not to have to resort to retouching for reasoning in this way It is an imperative to change the way that people have to think and to reason. Respecting the environment should not be a burden but must become a spontaneous and daily way of acting and thinking, only in this way we can get the maximum benefit with the least effort... it really takes a little effort
