This document summarizes treatment approaches for different types of jaundice. General treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve removing the cause, administering antibiotics or other drugs, or surgery. For neonatal jaundice, mild cases resolve on their own with increased feeding, while more severe cases use phototherapy or blood transfusions. Viral jaundice typically requires no treatment as the body clears the virus. Cholestatic jaundice treatment focuses on surgical interventions like cholecystectomy or nonsurgical options like oral bile acids or endoscopic procedures.
2. General concepts
Treatment depends on the underlying cause.
May involve removal of the offending agent.
Administration of antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, or anti-
parasitic drugs.
Surgery to correct blockage.
The use of chemotherapy, antiflammatory, or steroid
medications.
Dietary changes.
Or any combination of the above.
Also suggested that activity should be limited.
3. General Treatment
• - Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day
- Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables (especially green leafy
vegetables)
- Juice is good (make your own with a juice machine)
- Do not drink coffee, alcohol, soda pop, other junk food drinks
- Do not eat processed foods white sugar, white flour, etc.
- Use stress relief like going for walks in the park
- Brown rice and millet are good
- Avoid red meat and animal fats
- Reduce dairy products cheese, milk, and others
- Fast a few days a month
- A colon intestinal cleansing is helpful
- Get sleep
- Exercise light to moderate amounts eg. yoga and stretching are
good
- Do not smoke and avoid second hand smoke
4. Neonatal jaundice
• In mild or moderate levels of jaundice, by 5 to 7 days of age the
baby will take care of the excess bilirubin on its own.
• If high levels of jaundice do not clear up, then it is treated by
phototherapy
• Phototherapy: - Treatment with a special light that helps rid the
body of the bilirubin by altering it or making it easier for baby's
liver to get rid of it.
Precautions for phototherapy: - 1)Whilst undergoing
phototherapy the baby's eyes must be protected
against the light.
2)The baby must be fed
regularly to keep up a good urine
output and to prevent dehydration.
3) The baby may have loose
stools and may also become "tanned".
5. • In rare cases, where bilirubin levels are extremely high, blood
transfusion may be needed to give baby fresh blood and
remove the bilirubin.
• More frequent feedings of breast milk or formula to help
infants pass the bilirubin in their stools may also be
recommended.
6. Viral jaundice
For those suffering with viral form of
jaundice, usually no treatment is necessary
because the body will clear the virus by itself.
7. Cholestatic jaundice
Surgical intervention is mainstay of treatment.
The surgery performed is CHOLECYSTECTOMY.
It can be done by two methods 1) Open
2) Laparoscopic
Other forms of treatment modalities are: -
1) Oral bile acids like: - 1. Chenodeoxycholic
2. Ursodeoxycholic
2) Lithotripsy
3) Endoscopic sphincterotomy
