BIODATA OF DR SHEIKH MUSZAPHAR SHUKORDr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor (born Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie binSheikh Mustapha on July 27, 1972 is a Malaysian medical doctor and isscheduled to be the first Malaysian to go into space when he is launched to theaboard Soyuz TMA-11 on October 10, 2007. Shukor is flying as a spaceflightparticipant under an agreement with Russia through the Angkasawan program,and will return to Earth with the Expedition 15 crew members, Fyodor Yurchikhinand Oleg Kotov after nine days aboard the station.CAREERShukor was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and attended high school at MaktabRendah Sains MARA in Muar. Shukor then went on to obtain a Bachelor ofMedicine and Surgery degree from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.Shukor isan orthopedic physician, and a university lecturer in medicine at the UniversitiKebangsaan Malaysia.In 1998, Shukor worked at Hospital Seremban, followedby a move to Kuala Lumpur General Hospital in 1999, and was on staff atHospital Selayang from 2000 through 2001.Shukor is also a part-time model.ANGKASAWAN PROGRAMShukor and three other finalists were selected at the beginning of 2006 for theMalaysian Angkasawan spaceflight program. After completing initial training atStar City in Russia, Sheikh Muszaphar and Faiz Khaleed were selected toundergo an 18-month training program in Russia, at the end of which Shukor waschosen as the prime crew member, while Faiz Khaleed would serve as back-up.Following the final medical tests and training examinations, on September 17, itwas officially announced that Shukor would be flying with Expedition 16.During a NASA news conference with the Expedition 16 crew on July 23, 2007,and news conferences following his selection, Shukor said he hoped to be ableto take various live cell cultures to study during his flight.
SPACEFLIGHT AND RELIGIONSince Shukor is a Muslim, and his time in space will coincide with the last part ofRamadan, the Islamic National Fatwa Council drew up the first comprehensiveguidebook for Muslims in space. The 18-page guidebook is titled "Guidelines forPerforming Islamic Rites (Ibadah at the International Space Station"), and detailsissues such as how to pray in a low-gravity environment, how to locate Meccafrom the ISS, how to determine prayer times, and issues surrounding fasting. Theorbit of the ISS results in one day/night cycle every 90 minutes, so the issues offasting during Ramadan are also addressed. The guidebook will be translatedinto Russian, Arabic, and English.Ramadan began on September 13, 2007, andcontinues through about October 13, 2007, meaning Shukor will spend the lastfour days of Ramadan in space.Anan C. Mohd, from Malaysias Department ofIslamic Development said that fasting while traveling is optional, so Shukor couldchoose what he would like to do, but if he did decide to fast in space, the timeswould be centered around local time in Baikonur, where the launch takes place.SPACEFLIGHTSoyuz TMA-11 carrying Whitson, Malenchenko, and Sheikh Muszaphar,successfully launched at 13:22 UTC, Wednesday, October 10, 2007. After 11days in space, Sheikh Muszaphar boarded Soyuz TMA-10 for his return. TMA-10undocked from the ISS at 07:14 UTC on October 21, and deorbit occurred at09:47. During atmospheric re-entry, the spacecraft transitioned to a ballisticreentry, resulting in it landing west of Arkalyk, approximately 340 km (211 mi)northwest of the intended Kazakhstan landing site. The trajectory was reportedby the crew as soon as they came out of the communications blackout caused byplasma surrounding the spacecraft. A ballistic trajectory is a backup re-entrymode that takes over if something fails during normal re-entry. A Commission ofInquiry determined that the ballistic re-entry was caused by damage to a cable inthe spacecraft’s control panel, which connected the control panel with the Soyuzdescent equipment. Landing occurred at 10:36 GMT.
SPACE EXPERIMENTSheikh Muszaphar performed experiments on board the International SpaceStation relating to the characteristics and growth ofliver cancer and leukemia cells, the crystallisation of various proteins andmicrobes in space.The experiments relating to liver cancer, leukemia cells and microbes will benefitgeneral science and medical research, while the experiments relating to thecrystallisation of proteins, lipases in this case, will directly benefit local industries.Lipase are a type of protein enzymes used in the manufacturing of a diverserange of products from textiles to cosmetics, and the opportunity to grow these inspace will mean a possibility for Malaysian scientists to take a crack at anindustry worth some USD2.2bil (MYR7.7bil) worldwide by producing theselocally.
CONCLUSIONDato Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is a true Malaysian hero. I would to be asuccessful person as he is.
