Canadian Culture - Art/Music <ul><li>In the early stages of Canadian history art was very influenced by the Inuits </li></ul><ul><li>A well known form of Inuit Art was the Totem Poll such as the “Haida” to the right. </li></ul><ul><li>When the English settled in Canada they brought their own style of art. Their style was more of painting then the sculpting/design art of the Inuits. </li></ul><ul><li>In the early 1900’s a group of seven landscape painters attempted to create a Canadian style of art. </li></ul><ul><li>This group would paint colorful scenes of the Canadian wilderness such as A.Y. Jackson’s painting, Red Maple. (Top Right) </li></ul><ul><li>Canadian music is very similar with being influenced by many past cultures. </li></ul><ul><li>In order to encourage Canadian music, the music is government regulated. </li></ul><ul><li>Canadian Content (CANCON) regulations state that at least 36% of music played must be Canadian. </li></ul><ul><li>These Canadian artists who succeed are honored each year at the Juno Awards. </li></ul><ul><li>One of the most famous Canadian singers is Celine Dion </li></ul>

Canadian Theatre/Dance <ul><li>Canada has a very well-known theatre industry. </li></ul><ul><li>Many tourists travel to Canada during the summer months to visit theatre festivals. </li></ul><ul><li>Some of the well known festivals include; the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and the Shaw Festival </li></ul><ul><li>The Famous People Players is a touring act that has received international attention </li></ul><ul><li>Among its numerous festivals Canada also has a dance festival, the Canada Dance Festival </li></ul><ul><li>This event was founded in 1987 and occurs every June. </li></ul><ul><li>It takes place in Ottawa, Ontario at the National Arts Centre </li></ul>
  4. 4. Canadian Film <ul><li>Over the past twenty years or so Canadian actors,actresses and directors have become commonplace. Ex. Jim Carrey, Michael J. Fox, Pamela Anderson and Ellen Page. </li></ul><ul><li>It was not always that way, it wasn’t until the 1960’s until Canadian films started to get attention. </li></ul><ul><li>Around the timeframe of the 1980’s Canada has garnered more attention with Toronto being nicknamed Hollywood North. </li></ul><ul><li>A handful of TV shows have Canadian producers too, for example the X-files and Smallville. </li></ul><ul><li>In Canada the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation keeps Canadian culture alive by offering a lot of locally produced shows such as French Language Television. </li></ul><ul><li>Another thing influential to Canadian film is the National Film Board of Canada, this company helped pioneer the idea of a documentary. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Canadian Literature/Architecture <ul><li>Canadian literature is usually divided into French and British literature. As a whole though it is Canadian literature. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1992 the first Canadian won the Man Booker prize, that man was Michael Ondaatje. </li></ul><ul><li>Since then two other Canadians have been awarded the prize. </li></ul><ul><li>Carol Shields is a Canadian who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. </li></ul><ul><li>Canadian architecture has struggled to find a perfect medium due to the clash between French and British influence. </li></ul><ul><li>However one of the most recognizable pieces of Canadian architecture is the CN Tower located in Toronto. </li></ul>
