Research into a director and their previous work...
1. Martin Scorsese
Martin Charles Scorsese (nickname Marty) was born in New York City
on 17th November 1942. His Italian parents; Catherine and Charles
Scorsese raised him in the neighbourhood of Little Italy, which later
inspired several of his films. In 1964 he earned a B.S. degree in film
communications, then an M.A. in film communications at NY School
of Film in 1966. During this, he made prize winning films such as The
Big Shave and Who’s That Knocking at My Door. He’s an American
film maker, actor, screenwriter, film historian and producer.
2. He is most known for Goodfellas, Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island
and The Departed. Marty’s body of work addresses such themes as
Italian American identity, Roman Catholic concepts of guilt and
redemption, machismo, modern crime, and gang conflict. He uses
long tracking shots to open up the scene and voice-overs of his own
dialect but without revealing his face. Some films involve Western
references and many with dishonourable authority figures. Guilt is
highlighted as an important theme continuously and expressed
through Catholicism in creating and dealing with wrongfulness.
Finally he uses slow motion flashbulbs, accented camera flashes and
the song ‘Gimme Shelter’ Rolling Stones played in The Departures,
Goodfellas and Casino.
3. He frequently uses slow motion, e.g. Goodfellas, and
freeze frame, such as the opening credits of The King of
Comedy. This caption of movement is a close up shot
with delicate hands stuck against a glass window.
He has used blonde leading ladies many
times, aiming to appeal fragile and angelic.
They wear white in their first scene and are
photographed in slow motion. For instance,
Sharon Stone in a white mini dress featured in
Casino. Some films involve Western references
and many with dishonourable authority
figures, for example the policemen in
The Departed.
