    • Basic concepts, why SEO • SEO: Search Engine Optimization • Why SEO? – 90% of web users use a search engine everyday to find what they are looking for. It means that the search engine is the only tool they use to find services that they need. 3

    • 1.1 - Key Words – – – Title Tags (should be distinct, and exactly): Mouse Over Tab or on the top line of browser Description Tags (invisible on website, shown in search results- not availibling for google): Length less than 250 characters. Keyword Tags (invisible, only part of code-not availibling for google, too) (less than 250 characters) 5
    • 1.2 - BACKLINKS • Backlinks are incoming link to a web page. • The popular of your site in website. • the Quality of backlinks along with the Quantity that help you rank better in Search Engines. 6
    • 1.3 - DOMAIN NAMES That Work for SEO – Effective Domain Names • InsuranceLosAngeles.com • SanDiegoLawyer.com • PhoenixPizzaRestuarant.com – Ineffective Domain Names • JaneDoe.com • FranksPizza.com • BusinessName.com 7
    • 1.4 - TRAFFIC – The more traffic you have to your website, the higher it ranks – 1,000 page views or 1,000,000 page views – Which would you guess is more credible? – This goes for GOLD and PLATINUM listings as well, not just major websites! 8
    • 1.5 - CONTENT • The text content of your advertiser’s site must properly reflect their keywords. • The text content must be sufficient to show Search Engines that the site is credible • There must be enough dynamic content such as pictures and videos to show variety. This proves credibility. • Fresh and consistent content greatly improves SEO 9
    • 1.6 Key Factor And Search Engines • Yahoo – Focus is primarily on page content; key-phrase count, placement etc – Uses Keyword and Description Meta-Tags (invisible to user) – Looks for relevance of back links • Google – Focus is primarily on Back links including referring page relevance – Ignores Keyword and Description Meta-Tags – Looks for relevance of page content as well as key-phrase count etc • All – – – – Need error free code to be able to ‘see’ the content Pages should have 250+ ‘content’ words preferably nearer 500 Look for proper use of Headings to highlight important content Change their algorithms regularly (at least in small ways) 10

    • 2.1 www and non-www • When register a site, we owned two domain: http://www.domain.com and http://domain.com  Redirect all to one by using htaccess 13
    • 2.2 Robots.txt • give instructions to web robots, show them that they should not visit any pages on the site (for example: search result site, image url…); • You named it robots.txt, put in http://yourdomain.com/robots.txt • Robots.txt: – Insert rules for allow – Insert rules for disallow 14
    • 2.3 Img, link tag • Give full link of site instead of link like: images/avatar.jpg… • Link should be simple, has less parameters • Text in link should describe the link. – Good link: <a href=‘#’>Download chrome</a> – Bad link: <a href=‘#’>Click here</a> – Img should have alt, title attr. - Avoid dynamic link like index.php?company=1 15
    • 2.4 Site navigation-Site map • Site navigation and URL structure that search crawlers can easily follow • Submit sitemap to crawlers. 16
    • 2.5 404 page • Avoid using default 404 pages • Custom 404 pages are more userfriendly • Submitting all 404 URLs to the search engine helpful, but not essential • Remember to change the HTTP status code on custom error pages from 200 to 404 17

Useful tools for SEO (cont) • Rank tracker track the rank of keywords of a domain in search engine. • Website health check: check for missing title tag, description, dumplicate title… • Backlink summary tool: summary all backlink of a site (example:http://www.webmastertoolkit.com/link-popularity-checker.shtml) 18
