Getting Started with Newvem Business Groups for New Relic Presentation Transcript

  • 1. Newvem Business Groups for New Relic 1
  • 2. Introduction Newvem’s New Relic plugin offers the capability of filtering the cost, risks and assets of specific AWS resources associated with your application. Why is this important? New Relic is an Application Performance Monitoring service and Newvem is an Infrastructure Monitoring service. When combined, you get visibility to your full stack. However, the Application stack is usually only a subset of your full infrastructure (i.e – WebApp’s) while Newvem monitors all of your AWS infrastructure. With Newvem’s Business Groups feature you can filter your application environments to get granular visibility on costs and usage metrics. Business Groups are available in Newvem’s AWS Cost and Usage plugin within the New Relic Plugin Central. This way you will be able to see in New Relic the performance of your Application from the infrastructure level up to the full stack. 2

Example - tag name = “app_name”, tag value = “web-portal” – You can create tags by using the AWS tagging mechanism. AWS Tags User Manual - http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/Using_Tags.html 4. Login to your Newvem Dashboard and press on the ‘Business Groups’ button in the left pane navigation bar. Press the ‘Create Group’ button >> ‘Create Group’ wizard will open In the ‘Group By’ box choose ‘Tagged Resources’ To build business groups, you can also use other parameters, such as: ‘Security Groups’, ‘ELB’s’, ‘AMI’s’ or just by ‘Resource Names’. In the field ‘Key’, please choose / write the ‘Key Name’ you have given in your AWS console (you can double click to get the full list of all of your Key Names) In the field ‘Value’, please write the Value of the Key Name • You can choose the type of the expression you want to group by – ‘Exact Match’, ‘Starts With’, ‘Ends With’ or ‘Regular Expression’ • ‘Key Names’ and their ‘Values’ are case sensitive 4
