Some wonderful insights, both for those using intranets, and those developing intranet applications.

'...management isn’t ready to deal with comments.'

    Brilliant.

My initial thought was: 'It had probably better learn rather quickly' - the future is participation.

  1. Social media behind the firewall Global Intranet Trends for 2009

  3. Points to cover... Some figures and firsthand experiences Concerns & benefits Social media & the relation to the existing intranet How social media will change the role of the intranet manager
  4. In short... Social media are slowly coming into the enterprise. Well over half the organizations in the 2008 intranet survey are experimenting. Few have optimized. Those where the intranet is the “way of working” are more advanced in social media.
  5. 3 Stages of Intranet maturity stage The intranet is “the way of working” now. 3 stage 2 It will be soon: “in 1 or 2 years” stage It will be later: “in 3,4 years or more” 1
  6. Instant messaging is widely used in Stage 3, where the intranet is the “way of working”... Nearly 50 % “optimized” or “in general use”; Nearly 35 % “testing” or “used in some parts”.
  7. Blogging is widespread in Stage 3, where the intranet is the “way of working”.... 8 % - “optimized” or “in general use” Over 60 % - “used in some parts” or “testing”
  8. In very large organisations with over 50,000 employees.... 20 % say blogging is “optimized” or “in general use”.
  9. Firsthand experiences
  10. “Team of more than 200 people who need to collaborate on a daily basis, located in 3 buildings, on many floors. Instant messaging has provided a quick and easy way to see who is available in real time and has helped save numerous meetings, has decreased use of e- mail and voice mail.”
  11. “We've only begun to use wikis, though so far, it's been as a \"revolt\" against formal content management. Blogging has been considered, but management isn't ready to deal with comments.”
  12. (Wiki for newcomers) “Staff impact: ... easier for new employees to settle in nowadays. They help each other by updating the wiki where needed, and build up a social network at much quicker... Business impact: New employees become productive much quicker than before.”
  13. “Before using the blogs, some participants literally worked one floor away from others in the group and did not know that they were working on similar initiatives. Benefits include increased participation, increased sharing of knowledge and breaking down the silos.”
