  • 1. eDayz 2009:Unmoodlingyour Moodle
    Mark Drechsler
    Professional Services Manager
    NetSpot Pty Ltd
  • 2. About me...
  • 3. UnMoodle your Moodle site
    • ‘Text book’ techniques
    • 4. Sneaky tricks
    • 5. Software changes
    Case Study: A fictitious course
  • 6. Why is it so?
    Moodle has a deliberately
    structure...
  • 7. Which is great when:
    There aren’t lots of topics/weeks
    and
    There aren’t too many resources/activities
    otherwise...
  • 8. The
    Scroll
    Of
    Death...
    Otherwisewe may face...
  • 9. No one single cure... ...but there is hope!
  • 10. Tip 1: Better use of tools, e.g.
  • 11. Tip 2: Graphical navigation
Using a graphical navigation label to help users navigate the course
    • Can replace the navigation structure completely
    • 12. Can be in labels or as an HTML block
    • 13. Hinges on linking to topics
  • Aside...
There are also alternative course formats that may be suitable and do the same thing such as the accordion format
  • 14. Tip 3: One very sneaky trick*
    The ‘n-1’ topics method:
youtube.com/watch?v=XtHPUh_BaxM (or search for ‘Moodle unseen’)
    * Method not endorsed by anyone, may lead to unexpected results causing confusion and delay.
  • 15. And one minor software change
Graphical navigation good, but first view is still potentially big
NetSpot’s Team Moodle have made small mod to allow first view to focus on Topic 1
    (http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-19753)
  • 16. Set default topic in Course Settings
  • 17. Questions?
