Website SEO Target your local competition first | Neogain Online Marketing

 1. 1.

Website SEO –

Target your local competition first

Many website owners are overly ambitious when it comes to search engine optimisation.

 2. 2.

It isn’t unusual to see websites abandoned after short periods of time, because the expected traffic and related benefits didn’t materialise.

On occasion these websites will spring back to life, but often with a poor strategy replacing the last poor strategy, doomed to failure.

Want SEO training? Hire Neogain to train you.

 3. 3.

Politicians ‘could’ tell you all about picking fights to gain popularity.

Some sales experts would suggest narrowing your focus, rather than trying to cater to everyone.

Taking both scenarios as a guide and trying to out rank a local competitor could give you focus, and if implemented correctly could present you with a stronger more focused SEO strategy.

 4. 4.

Building a search engine optimisation strategy for a business shouldn’t just be about keyword research, but accessing competitor weaknesses, using your strengths and moving forward with a clear objective.

Earlier in the year we created an ‘Art of SEO‘ series, which covered competing against competitors. This article isn’t as intense, provides new advice and outlines some basic first steps you could take.

 5. 5.

Who are your local competitors?

Draw up a list of who your local competitors are and analyse their website. Find out their page ranking, the keywords they are targeting and who is linking to them.

For suggested tools please read ‘Sun Tzu – The Art of SEO part 7‘ for further details.

 6. 6.

Do their have social network profiles?

Research to see if they have social network profiles. If they are sharing links via bit.ly then you can analyse the statistics for those links, by just adding a + to the end of the link. I.e: http://bit.ly/aYqVVn becomes http://bit.ly/aYqVVn+

You will be able to discover how many people are actually clicking on the link, where people are located and when the link is being clicked.

 7. 7.

This could help you strengthen your own strategy by discovering trends you might want to incorporate into your campaign. There is no point just trying to use social networks for link building, but also gaining increased visitor traffic.

If they created an article that was shortened and shared elsewhere, look at the sources where the clicks came from. This presents you not only with an additional location to try and build links via, but also could be a location where potential clients are visiting.

 8. 8.

Search isn’t all about ‘Google Search’.

Google’s search engine is the biggest player, but their YouTube service is also a search engine and draws in a lot of traffic.

Do your competitors use video sharing websites?

Again you can analyse the statistics for a YouTube video – including statistics such as gender, age and location.

 9. 9.

Please read ‘Analyse your competitor’s YouTube videos‘ for further details.

Then if you use YouTube as part of your SEO campaign (place a url in the descrption & embed into your blog for SEO benefits), you will be able to narrow your own focus, and get off to a better start, rather than trying to discover what works.

 10. 10.

Forming a search engine optimisation strategy.

Your strategy shouldn’t be purely based on your competition, but by going to war against your competition, your new website could get off to a good start, and for existing websites reignite the traffic flow.

Remember you have to also find your own path, but you can’t just build a website and ignore the competition.

 11. 11.

In theory the more active your competition, the more statistics you can gain.

In a sense they will have down some of the leg work for you, and helped you build a more effective SEO strategy.

Why not take search engine optimisation training ?

Hire Neogain to train you.
