      • 5 Self-hosted WordPress Tips for Administrators
      • This blog post provides five self-hosted WordPress Tips for administrators and / or developers.
      • Often a decent tip can just be the obvious, sometimes something more complex.
      • These tips cover various issues that administrators often have to overcome.
      • If you require a WordPress Developer, please request a proposal from Neogain.
      • Note: Please note you use these tips at your own risk.
      • Q. How do you repair a broken MySQL database?
      • A. Sometimes tables in a WordPress MySQL database can become broken. Often the WordPress website will continue to function, without anyone noticing. Other times the WordPress website becomes seriously unstable and the website won’t load. Using phpMyAdmin you can repair a broken MySQL database and get the website working once again.
      • Q. How do you change the author of a WordPress blog post?
      • A. The easiest tip of this article, but perhaps it will be the advice you will find the most consistently useful over time, if you have multiple WordPress users contributing posts. In the latest versions of WordPress you open the individual post, and you can then select the new author from a drop-down box and then update the post.
      • Q. How do you add files to a WordPress website without FTP access?
      • Obviously the answer depends on the type of file, but I’m going to presume we are not talking media related files.
      • Often an administrator or developer won’t be given FTP access to a live WordPress website, but might need to change a write permission to modify a file such as a theme file, else have other requirements.
      • With the help of the plugin file commander this hopefully shouldn’t be a problem.
      • As you probably know depending on a server configuration, often a plugin can be installed via the WordPress dashboard.
      • Now here is where the danger lies, adding a plugin could cause a major problem, such as the WordPress website falling over, that might result in you needing FTP or database access to resolve the issue.
      • So it is risky. If you take the risk and everything goes smoothly you will be able to upload, modify and delete files on the server.
      • Please bare in mind the security issues that arise out of installing such a plugin.
      • Q. How do you find the database name and access details?
      • A. Again if you have been hired to continue the development of a WordPress website, else administrate a site, there could be a delay being provided database access details, which you might need asap. i.e. Deleting old WordPress blog post revisions to reduce the MySQL database size for instance.
      • If you can access the wp-config.php file you can then find the database details, enabling you to use a database management package such as phpMyAdmin then to modify the database.
      • If you require WordPress Developers , please consider Neogain.
