Legionella in ‘other risk systems’

  1. 1. Legionella in ‘Other RiskSystems’ - By Nemco Utilities (www.nemco-utilities.co.uk)
  2. 2. Legionella in ‘Other RiskSystems’ACOP L8 states that a Legionella Risk Assessment shouldbe ‘suitable and sufficient’ which in general terms is takento mean that anywhere on a premises that uses or storeswater should be included in the risk assessment. Aside fromthe usual domestic water services and evaporative coolingsystems a brief mention is made in the guidance about‘other risk systems’.For more information about unusual water systems or about Legionella Management in general, please visit our website www.nemco-utilities.co.uk or call on 01284 724 503.
  3. 3. Legionella in ‘Other RiskSystems’‘Other Risk Systems’ can be classified as anything thatmeets chain of events allowing proliferation anddissemination of Legionella bacteria and could include; • Water features / irrigation systems • Humidifiers • Emergency showers • Machine tool coolant systemsFor more information about unusual water systems or about Legionella Management in general, please visit our website www.nemco-utilities.co.uk or call on 01284 724 503.
  4. 4. Legionella in ‘Other RiskSystems’Over recent years a number of ‘high risk, other risksystems’ have come to light and triggered the release ofadditional technical guidance or guidance notes from eitherthe HSE or industry professionals such as the WaterManagement Society.A good example of this is aqueous tunnel washers, oftenfound in white goods and vehicle manufacturing facilities, used to de grease and pre treat components prior to thembeing painted. For more information about unusual water systems or about Legionella Management in general, please visit our website www.nemco-utilities.co.uk or call on 01284 724 503.
  5. 5. Legionella in ‘Other RiskSystems’Up until an outbreak at the JCBfactory in 2008, this was apreviously unknown source ofbacteria and sparked a raft ofadditional recommendations forroutine sampling and watertreatment. Similarly, a number ofinstances prompted some additionalguidance to be circulated regardingthe operation of vehicle / car washes. For more information about unusual water systems or about Legionella Management in general, please visit our website www.nemco-utilities.co.uk or call on 01284 724 503.
  6. 6. Legionella in ‘Other RiskSystems’If you already have a comprehensive risk assessment in place, any such systems will have been highlighted a regime suggested. If in any doubt, ask yourself are there any water processes(domestic or industrial) where the following conditions may bepresent; • Water temperature in the range 20oC to 45oC • The presence of nutrients such as sludge, scale and rust • Water stagnation • Potential for creation of an aerosolFor more information about unusual water systems or about Legionella Management in general, please visit our website www.nemco-utilities.co.uk or call on 01284 724 503.
  7. 7. Legionella in ‘Other RiskSystems’If so, these should form an integral part of the assessmentand ongoing management programme. However, whilst it isrelatively simple to identify these processes, the amount ofinformation available to determine what precautions arenecessary is very limited. For more information about unusual water systems or about Legionella Management in general, please visit our website www.nemco-utilities.co.uk or call on 01284 724 503.
