  • 3. Should this be conserved?
  • 4. What ( value ) and why ( perceived threat ) to conserve?
    • Anything (object, language, water, etc.) will be conserved only if it has some perceived ‘value’ in it
    And there is some perceived threat to it Value Conservation Threat
  • 5. ‘ Value ’ adding as ‘ history writing ’
    • A ‘ study ’ of the past
    • Not a mindless study of the past but an attempt to bring out something of ‘ value ’
    • As per Bernard Fielding: “ A building is a building till a historian comes and picks it up and adds value to it making it a piece of heritage ”

  • 6. Extant history of Indian Architecture is ‘exclusive’ Buddhist/ Hindu Islamic Colonial Modern Classical Animal ‘Elephant ’ Classical animal ‘Reptile ’ Hybrids that do not conform To the norm are bad
  • 7. Whatever is considered historical/heritage is then conserved
    • Only these examples are taught in architecture schools and looked after by the various conservation agencies. This has led to the neglect of much of our heritage
  • 8. ‘ What' and ‘why’ to conserve always will precede the question ‘how’ to conserve
    • If more importance was given to history writing , our otherwise neglected heritage would be much better looked after.
    • Because after all ‘conservation’ is a reaction and not an independent act in itself.

    • La Martiniere College, designed and constructed by Major General Claude Martin in 1796 is a historic building and a landmark of the 19 th century Nawabi architecture in Lucknow and India. It is not protected by the ASI, but is listed under INTACH and falls within a heritage zone delineated in the Lucknow Master Plan 2001. This offers the building some legal protection in terms of development around the historic structures .
