    Notes on slide 1

Explain our aims for the workshop ie. how to find info, how to make sure it is what you need and how to use it effectively including citing and referencing.

On order to gather info need to carry out a literature search. What: Consider in order to find right type of info. What type of info...figures, images, theories, case studies etc.. Why: Why you need it will determine the amount and level of info required.....background info (overview), answer a question (specific), new ideas (up-to-date), substantiate a theory (in-depth) etc.. When: Immediately or by a deadline in the future, think how-long it will take to get hold of info. How and where and who ...next slides.........

Eg. Subject Enterprise Resource Planning . Alternative: ERP Broader: Business planning, Business enterprise, management software Narrower: production planning Related: Manufacturing resource planning, Material requirement planning.

Shows how initial research and brainstorming can provide search terms, related subjects etc. You can also see that your research can be multidisciplinary ie. overlap several different subject areas eg. computing, business, engineering etc CIM – Computer Integrated Manufacturing CRM – Customer Relationship Management EAS – Enterprise Application Suite is the new name for ERP – how it is developing MRP – Material Requirements Planning ERP can cover a wide range of functions and integrate them into one unified database, automating core business functions including production, accounting, distribution, supply chain and human resources.

LR page is a portal to many resources including: The Library Catalogue – which helps you find all the resources that are in the physical library such as books, journals, DVDs, dissertations, software disks etc. Library Subject Guides Electronic Databases Electronic Journals E-Books E-Newspapers Library Subject Guides By using LR portal, you can access quality and appropriate resources. Resources found elsewhere for example on the internet may not be accessible or refereed. Explain importance of using a variety of resources/sources ie. balance, varying viewpoints etc. Also information on ILLs, opening times, helpsheets and guides, WebHelpdesk etc So in terms of information resources – what do we have? Book – Ebook, Journals . . . Etc. Journals: What is a journal? Why do you need to use journals? Where do you find the journals What is a journal/magazine? A journal is a publication published on a regular basis e.g. monthly. It is similar to a magazine, but is generally of a more scholarly, academic nature. You may also hear the terms periodical or serial used – these terms mean the same as journal. Journals may contain a selection of scholarly articles by various authors within a specific subject area, usually published as original, academic research. They are published with a volume and issue or part number. The volume number usually remains the same throughout the year, whilst the issue number changes with each new issue. An example of an issue would be January being issue 1, although this is not a strict rule. Scholarly articles are usually concise, providing in depth information on a narrow topic and include a bibliography and references. Non-scholarly articles are usually published for commercial rather than academic purposes. They are normally contained in magazines that are glossy and heavily illustrated which appeal to a general audience. Articles are often short and not always attributed to an author and the information is rarely referenced. Some journals are only available electronically, whilst others are available in both print format and electronically.

Library subject guide brings everything together for your subject area. Useful sections on: Citing references (under ‘literature searching’) including RefWorks Current awareness Getting help Spend a few minutes looking at the Library Subject Guide.
