  2. 2. DefinitionAcromegaly is a hormonal disorder that develops when your pituitary glandproduces too much growth hormone during adulthood.In children who are still growing, too much growth hormone can cause acondition called gigantism.

Presentation and Diagnosis• enlarged hands and feet (no longer put on rings or shoes that used to fit).• changes in the shape of your face (protruding lower jaw and brow, an enlarged nose,thickened lips, and wider spacing between your teeth.)• Coarse, oily, thickened skin• Excessive sweating and body odor• Small outgrowths of skin tissue (skin tags)• Fatigue and muscle weakness• A deepened, husky voice due to enlarged vocal cords and sinuses

Treatment• Surgical resection (Transsphenoidal surgical resection ) of GH-secretingadenomas is the initial treatment .• Somatostatin (Octreotide is administered by subcutaneous injection,beginning with 50 g tid; the dose can be increased gradually up to 1500 g/d).• GH Receptor Antagonist (Pegvisomant is administered by dailysubcutaneous injection (10–20 mg)).
