  20. Application Programming Interface or API (WARNING: Slide for tech folk)
  21. Application Programming Interface or API (a bit less technical) http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v = PfuWDbVJGgw
  22. Interesting thing using an API: a ‘mashup’
  23. What kind of API did we create? (WARNING: slide for tech folk) http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =WImJskBfZ30
  24. Why would we (or you) do this? (DON’T WORRY: slide not just for tech folk) http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =AMhcxRWmbL0
  25. What do the museums we work with think? Any concerns? (I swear I didn’t script this) http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =hl8JBaYaVBM
  26. What about when someone makes a mashup? Still OK? http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =FLBs1YMzKt4
  27. Are mashups all the API is good for? (Ignore Adrian saying ‘yeah’) http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v = wnxVWAqMKqQ
  28. TIPS FOR TRYING THIS AT HOME: Make it tangible (not just ‘releasing an API’) http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =sn7egYywZpM
    • Standards are great but
TIP: Realise (or realize) we live in an imperfect world
  29. Not just data collection but information itself. A perfectionist’s nightmare.
    • What’s the BEST thing that could happen?
TIP: Demonstrate the possibilities (not just the technology or the risks)
    • Mitigate risks through licenses & technology
TIP: Work with your community of practice to develop the above
    • Don’t make it harder for yourself
TIP: Work fast & avoid unnecessary effort (spec as you go)
    • It doesn’t have to be scary
TIP: The sky will not fall (lawyers just like to make it seem that way sometimes)
    • You don’t have to get it right the first time
TIP: Just fix it quickly (and DO fix it)
    • Build trusted relationships & community
TIP: Your friends and family will accept your failings & help you grow
    • Prepare to be amazed (or disappointed) by what people build
TIP: Make sure the builders know where the tools are
  30. If you could say one thing to people at MW2009 what would it be? http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =AbV4bRWH7m0
  31. If you could say one thing to people at MW2009 what would it be? http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =IquyVR2zSbk
    • Use the API – we’d love feedback
    • Get in touch about collaborating with us / to share API experiences (info@digitalnz.org)
    • Do you have any NZ material? We could be a safe test bed for you to trial opening up access through an API
    • Come play during the 8-9.30 demonstration slot tomorrow or online
Conclusion: Sorry my slides are boring. But I promise we are a fun team to work with.
  32. Making NZ content & collections easier to find, share & use http://www.digitalnz.org
  33. I thought you might be interested in that. So I asked Andy about our API methods. http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =nH2eOgYQhOI
  34. I thought you might be interested in that. So I asked Andy about the key too. http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =PP9kaxtMxic
