Lampedusa Analysis

  1. 1. Lampedusa An Analysis of the European Union & Italian Government
  2. 2. First Spark October 3rd: migrant boat catches fire, sinks less than one kilometer from the shores of Lampedusa, Italy. Over 300 migrants seeking asylum dead. Local ships avoided the stalled boat until the crisis got out of hand; only then did the coast guard intervene.
  3. 3. Why no one Helped They feared prosecution. Lampedusa is a bottleneck for incoming immigrants to Europe, both legal and illegal. The European Union has strong laws against aiding human smugglers and illegal immigrants. This is not the first boat to sink off the shores of Lampedusa.
  4. 4. Why no one Helped They feared prosecution. Lampedusa is a bottleneck for incoming immigrants to Europe, both legal and illegal. The European Union has strong laws against aiding human smugglers and illegal immigrants. This is not the first boat to sink off the shores of Lampedusa.
  5. 5. Internal Response The European Union is waiting three weeks before responding. Lacking unification in response. Leaving it open for other entities to fill the information gap. Unclear laws and policies.
  6. 6. Internal Response Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta breaks his promise to immigrants. Pledging 210 million euros to this crisis. Cognitive dissonance between donation and prime minister’s action. Italy’s president has been silent in the media.
  7. 7. Media Response Media is unsure who to blame at this point. The more biased opinion columns are attacking the European Union and its unclear policies. Unclear how media will respond to the prime minister’s actions in the days to come.
  8. 8. Media Response Where is the president in the media buzz? If this crisis matures into a policy issue, he will need to speak up; sooner than later if his prime minister does not handle the crisis more efficiently.
  9. 9. Stakeholder Response They mayor is an advocate for the immigrants; spoke against the prime minister’s actions. Citizens of Lampedusa opened their homes to survivors, giving them time to mourn.
  10. 10. Stakeholder Response Humanitarian groups are arguing increased border regulations is increasing the mortality rates. European Network Against Discrimination thinks immigration scares are causing Europeans to discriminate against both legal and illegal African immigrants.
