A proposal of XB

 1. 1. ○ Naoka MISAWA (U’eyes Design Inc.) Mitsuru FUIJITA (DENSO CORPORATION) A proposal of XB-method , an Idea Generation System for New Services using User Experiences HCII No.332 July 23, 2009
 2. 2. Overview

To present XB-method, an idea generation system and its study effect.

To propose XB-method as a idea generation system incorporating with the fundamental principles of HCD.

 3. 3. Agenda

Background

Outline of XB-method

How to use XB-method

Experiment : Workshop

Conclusion

 4. 4. 1 . Background
 5. 5. What is needed for product planning in Japan? User Diversifying in lifestyle It is to provide affecting experiences through products and services. Seeking the higher degree of satisfaction
 6. 6. A product planning flow (KANDA model ) To find and confirm the potential need To develop the creative concept To objectively-define the best concept To make the direction for the developer and the planning 1.Research & Analysis 2.inspiration 3.optimization 4.installation
 7. 7. Problems in the current planning of affecting products

Being unable to respond to the pace of development

Eliminating product’s value from one’s experience

 8. 8. XB activity is applicable to the inspiration process of product planning To find and confirm the potential need To develop the creative concept To objectively-define the best concept To make the direction for the developer and the planning 1.Research & Analysis 2.inspiration 3.optimization 4.installation XB-method
 9. 9. 2. Summary of XB-method
 10. 10. Mechanism of idea generation

It is

to project affecting elements that are extracted from actual experiences of users into product images to be designed.

to generate new affecting experiences by multiplying unexpected elements each other.

 11. 11. Schematizing affecting elements have been pursued truthful it was by a chance Value Subject Relationship
 12. 12. 3 components of User Experience The way of involvements such as perceptions and experiences, and the context of the time Fascinations or characteristics of the subject A sense of value that people cherish before having a relationship with the subject Definition In what relationship? For what subject? In what perspective? Scene of appearance Relationship Subject Value Label of Component
 13. 13. XB-method Activity

Decide a targeting commodity and user

Select a set of keywords from the database

Develop images of keywords

Multiplying images

Exchange ideas to develop images

Label the idea

Organize conditions for scenario-writing

Draw up a scenario

Previous Arrangement Divergent Thinking Bundle in a scenario
 14. 14. 3. How to use XB-method
 15. 15.

Decide a targeting commodity

Car navigation system Activity. 1
 16. 16. have been pursued values Subject Relationship truthful it was by a chance Activity. 2 Select a set of keywords from the database
 17. 17. have been pursued values Subject Relationship truthful it was by a chance Activity. 3 Develop images of keywords information about my secret idol real superstar It was displayed by accident
 18. 18. Activity. 4 Multiply images × × if I register my secret superstar, the car navigation system lets me know the information associated with him or her. information about my secret idol real superstar It was displayed by accident
 19. 19. Activity. 5 Exchange ideas to develop images if I register my secret superstar, the car navigation system lets me know the information associated with him or her. Let’s combine this with that service! What kinds of interface would be appropriate?
 20. 20. Activity. 6-8 Draw up a scenario Ken enjoys driving in Nagoya. He is a big fan of Ichiro, a major leaguer. After a while, the car navigation system gives him information about “the pork cutlet restaurant where Ichiro often visited while he was a student.” The pork cutlet is now available here, which built up his strong body. Ken stops to park expecting the flavor of Ichiro’s cutlet and enters the restaurant.
 21. 21. 4. Experiment : workshop
 22. 22. Workshop

- Sep 2007 ~ Oct 2008

- 5 sessions

90min. - 120min. / session

- Participants : 80 people in total

IT service, Automobile and Household goods industories

Product planners, CS, Usability Engineers and so on

 25. 25. Idea Development Sheets used in the workshop
 26. 26. The XB Effect

It is able

to generate ideas effectively.

to meet better-than-expected ideas.

to see development process.

to develop products in users’ perspectives.

 27. 27. 5. Conclusion
 28. 28. Conclusion

It is required to provide Affecting Experience in order to plan innovative products.

We develop XB-method, an idea generation system, to design Affecting Experience by creating Scenario.

As a result of study involving over 80 people, it is proved that XB-method has the advantage of generating ideas in users’ perspectives.

XB-method, therefore, is a method which is able to design User Experience in users’ perspectives.

 29. 29. Future Prospect

To study the way using the database effectively

as follows;

by user to be targeted

by a product or a service to be developed
