Elliott Grant
Written by mother, Theresa Grant
Elliott Hamilton Grant was the family name we
had chosen before he was born. Everyone
remarked that it was a noble name and that of
a future President for sure.
Little did we know that Elliott was to be born with a diagnosis of Down
syndrome. It was not what we expected but we are a better family
because of it! Elliott is 17 years old and is a sophomore at Reno High
School. Elliott thrives in regular class (73% of his day) and especially in
Junior ROTC. The Colonel in ROTC has made sure that Elliott is treated with
respect and in a friendly manner (just like the other cadets) and is part of
every ROTC event. Elliott especially loves his ROTC uniform which is very
similar to his Dad's Army National Guard uniform.
Elliott recently interviewed and was hired to work
at Trader Joe's in Reno. The manager believed in
and liked him so much that he hired him
right away. Elliott has become part of the friendly
gang at TJ's and we are thrilled that he is part of
a wonderful company.
Elliott loves parades, movies, musicals, dancing, books, and giving
speeches. He dislikes loud noises, big flowers and drooping ivy plants.
Even though we are always working on academics, he will never be at
the level of his peers. However, he has wonderful strengths such as a great
memory, his health, good manners, and his empathy toward others. Elliott
wants to get married and drive when he grows up.
Although Elliott will never be President, he was put on this earth for a
special reason and to be a special part of people's lives. Just like
everyone.

TAKE ACTION
Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act
Its on the verge of passing thanks to the National Down Syndrome Society
(NDSS)! Over 85% of the entire US Congress supports the ABLE Act with 74
cosponsors in the Senate and 381 cosponsors in the House.
The United States Senate Committee on Finance
published a press release on September 19th, 2014
outlining a path forward for the ABLE Act by
reaching a policy agreement that will serve as the
foundation for its passage in November. If this
landmark legislation passes, it will help people with Down syndrome and other
disabilities have a more enriched quality of life and aspire to be inspired!
