Dubai’s new health insurance law mandates that employers provide health insurance to both Foreign and United Arab Emirates (UAE) national employees working in Dubai, says Nair & Co.'s International HR and Payroll Services Team.

1. Dubai Mandates Health Insurance for all National and Foreign Employees
(Bristol, UK) - Dubai’s new health insurance law mandates that employers provide health insurance to both Foreign
and United Arab Emirates (UAE) national employees working in Dubai, says Nair & Co.'s International HR and
Payroll Services Team.
The objective of the law is to provide health coverage for every citizen, foreign resident and visitor. The proposed
Universal health care coverage is planned to expand in phases, starting this year through mid-2016.
Employers planning to hire expats to work in Dubai are required to pay for employees’ health insurance, proof of
such coverage is mandatory for obtaining residence visas.
Employers in Dubai are now responsible for:




Providing valid health insurance to foreign workers.
Providing proof of medical insurance as a requirement for obtaining a visa.
Offering all employees the obligatory health insurance from DHA registered insurance companies with health
insurance permits.
Any expenses related to health insurance; the cost may not be deducted from employee salaries.
Companies operating in Dubai with the intention of hiring foreign workers are advised to familiarize themselves
with the new health insurance mandates and implement an internal policy for such coverage. Failure by employers
to provide worker health insurance may result in fines of Dh500-150,000 (~US $150- 40,850). Repeated violations
may result in fines up to Dh500,000 (~US $136,250).
