  5. 5. 4. Definition of Key Terms• SQ3R method is a systematic procedure used forreading through a text. It helps the students to thinkabout the text while they are reading it. This strategyteaches the students how to read and think like aneffective reader (Adlit, 2008). SQ3R is a teachingstrategy comprising 5 steps i.e. surveying,questioning, reading, reciting, and reviewing.• Reading comprehension skill refers to the student’sreading comprehension scores obtained from readingtest score.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY• Research DesignCAR (Classroom Action Research)• Setting & Subject of the StudyThe study was conducted at Eight-Grade of MadrasahTsanawiyah Kanjeng Sepuh Gresik, class VIII A, the first (odd)semester of the academic year 2012/2013.• Research ProcedureThere are two cycles:- 1st cycle conducted on 10 December 2011- 2nd cycle conducted on 7 January 2012Consist of four steps, i.e. (1) Planning, (2) Implementing, (3)Observing, and (4) Reflecting.
  10. 10. Planning• Preparation• Designing the Lesson Plan1. Teaching learning objectives.2. Instructional material & media:a. Descriptive Text (the instructional material)b. Illustration pictures & real picture (the media)3. Teaching & learning activityTo be conducted in the implementation of the strategy.4. EvaluationWas done through post-test administered at the end ofevery cycle.
  11. 11. Preparing Criteria of Success1. 80% students’ score are improved from become at least 70based on the minimum standard score.2. 78 % of the students are enthusiast in learning reading.3. The students are active in learning reading. The way tomeasure the activeness of the students is by using the list ofgiving question or giving feedback related to the topic inlearning time.4. The students are motivated in learning reading. The way tomeasure the motivations of the students is the using ofdictionary. It means that the students often look up thedictionary if they don`t know the meaning of one word inEnglish.5. The students enjoy the reading class. The students`enjoyment can be seen from while learning time where theyare really enthusiastic and often ask the teacher to do thesame thing (SQ3R method) for the next English meeting.

Post-readingTo wind down the students and to strengthen their memory.Then the researcher asked them to reread the text and write asummary.

ObservingThe observation was done by the teacher who sat inthe back row while the researcher implementing theaction by using the observation sheet.• About the implementation of the lesson plan.• About any aspects of the implementation wererecorded throughout the teaching & learning process.

  17. 17. The Cycle Procedure• PlanningPreparation were in the form of lesson plan where theinstructional material of that day in cycle 1 was a textentitled “Keukenhof Flower Park” , and “Roro Antengand Joko Seger” in the cycle 2.

Implementing• Told the students the objectives of the lesson plan.• Explain about the SQ3R method.• Activate the students’ prior knowledge by showing a picture oftext anddistributed to all of the students.• Ask the students to study the picture about three until fiveminutes.• Distributed the text to all of the students.• The class divided into group of 4 till 5 students.• Then the researcher explain about how to survey the text andasked the students to read the title of the text carefully.

Implementing• The researcher assigned the students to discuss with their group& make 2 questions based on the title they’d read.• The researcher asked them to answer their own question relatedto the title they had read.• Then the researcher asked them to read the whole text carefullywhile searching for the answer t their own questions.• After asking the students to read the text, the researcher toldthem to answer the prepared questions without looking up thetext (reciting).• In the post-reading stage, they were assigned to review the textby reading the important parts.• In the last activity was summary writing for all of the groups.
  20. 20. Observing• The observation was done by the English teacher who acted asan observer during the implementation of the SQ3R method.
  21. 21. Reflection• Evaluation• The students resultIn the cycle 2 the criteria of success of the study hadbeen achieved.
  22. 22. COCLUSIONS1. The number of the students got score greater than or equal to 65 inincreased from 18 students or 45% in the pre-test to 28 students or 70% incycle 1 and 39 students or 97% in cycle 2.2. the number of the students who make progress on their score for at least 5points increased from 27 students or 67% in cycle 1 to 30 students or75% in cycle 2.3. The average of the students’ reading comprehension score increased from60.35 in the pre-test to 69.46 in cycle 1 and 77.25 in cycle 2. Therefore,these criteria of success were achieved.4. The SQ3R reading strategy was introduced by Francis P. Robinson in1941. It consists of five steps, i.e. surveying, questioning, reading,reciting, and reviewing.
