Question 3What kind of media distributor would distribute your product and why?
The production process• The production process• My magazine will have to go through the production process, this includes 5 steps:• Thinking up ideas for the magazine: what it will look like, the genre of the magazine, what kind of content will it offer and who its target audience will be• Research of current magazines of its kind on the market - theyre similarities and why theyre successful - Who are their audience and what appeals to them• Make flat plans to give me an idea of what the product might look like (title, image sell lines etc.)• Constructing the magazine on a industrial scale• Distributing the product to a mass market or a niche audience depending on who I think the magazine will appeal to.
Target AudienceMy magazines target audience seems to be urban kids who listen to Hip Hop music. This is the same audience as fellow Hip Hop magazines such as: Vibe and Rap-Up which also follow the Hip Hop genre. These magazines seem to be aimed at a mainstream audience as they are very popular and Hip Hop has success in the charts all around the world. As my audience is mainstream I think Beaur Media Group would be suitable to publish as they already publish popular magazines such as: Kerrang!, Q and Empire. Their magazines are aimed at mass markets and distribute their products to large retailers such as: WHSmiths, selected HMV stores and various supermarkets.
Who can publish my magazine? The reason I think Beaur Media can publish my magazine is because this is the first Hip Hop genre magazine they will publish. They might not know the target audience well but urban culture is very popular and is very mainstream. This can be a good reason as well because by publishing a Hip Hop magazine, Beaur Media will gain another audience in the urban group. My product is nothing like what they already sell, even though other music magazines; they havent tried the Hip Hop market. This can be good as now they have variety in the genres of magazines they publish. The company has a good reputation as they already publish magazines such as: Kerrang!, Q etc. The reputation is important consumers will trust companies that has a good reputation and isnt embroiled in any bad news as this will persuade them to buy one of their many genres of magazines. My product is mainstream as I have mentioned before Hip Hop is very popular all around the world, this is similar to the style of Beaur Media as their magazines, Kerrang! And Q are also mainstream as well and not aimed at niche audiences.
Advertising my magazine• There are many ways to advertise my magazine: TV - the magazine would be advertised on channels such as: Flava, MTV Bass etc. which are all Hip hop music channels• Internet - there can be various ads all around other sites that advertises my magazine and also can be advertised on social networks: Facebook, Twitter etc.
Distributing my productAs my magazine is a mainstream product is it more suited to be distributed to massive retailers such as: WHSmiths, ASDA, Tesco and other major supermarkets as well as most local newsagents. I will also provide an online subscription to the magazine so subscribers get their copy of the magazine mailed to their door. The emergence of web 2.0 makes it easier for my magazine to be marketed and distributed from online advertising agencies to add-ons on websites of Hip Hop clothing.
