What is an IEP??? <ul><li>IEP stands for Individual Education Plan </li></ul><ul><li>Your IEP is a tool for you to use to pick classes and set goals for after you graduate </li></ul><ul><li>This is a legally binding document that spells out exactly what special education services you receive and why. </li></ul>
  • 3. Why do I need to know what an IEP is? <ul><li>Because whether of not you know about it you have one. </li></ul><ul><li>Because your IEP has a huge impact on what type of education you are receiving </li></ul><ul><li>Because your IEP is the plan for YOUR future. </li></ul>
  • 4. So What??? Like What I Think Matters To Anyone…
  • 5. Guess What? It Does. Your Thoughts, Hopes, Dreams, Goals and Feelings are VERY important in planning your IEP. After all its about YOU!
  • 6. You Have The Right To Be Heard But you also have responsibilities
  • 7. RIGHTS: <ul><li>To have a say in your future </li></ul><ul><li>To be treated fairly </li></ul><ul><li>To have your feelings, thoughts and wants taken in to consideration </li></ul><ul><li>To know what your IEP says about you </li></ul>
  • 8. <ul><li>You need to know about your disability and be able to talk to other people about your disability </li></ul><ul><li>You need to participate in your team meetings and make sure that everyone is aware of your feelings. </li></ul><ul><li>You need to be able to talk about your wants, needs, and goals </li></ul>Responsibilities:
  • 9. Your IEP Is A Team Effort <ul><li>You need to be a part of that team. </li></ul><ul><li>You can also pick other people to be on that team. People that are important in your life. </li></ul><ul><li>Members of this team can include family members, teachers, therapist, support staff, and other people that you work with at school </li></ul>
  • 10. Can You Think Of Someone You Would Want On Your Team?
  • 11. So what can you do to help plan your IEP? <ul><li>Know your strengths. </li></ul><ul><li>Know what you need help with. </li></ul><ul><li>Know what your IEP says </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you want. </li></ul><ul><li>Think about your future. What does is look like? What do you want to do? </li></ul>
  • 12. The important thing… Remember that your IEP is about YOU! No one knows what you want or need better than YOU!
